Here in Texas they tow the car, you get a trip to jail, your license gets revoked, and you get charged with a felony along the lines of DUI/DWI. Then there are the fines and fees to pay, some of which have to be paid every year for 3 years.

Still, people street race.

I was never much of a street racer anyway but now I drive like grandpa; got too much on the line to risk it.

I have a good friend who moved here from NO. He constantly begs me to take the car out there and since another friend of mine is now on the NBA team a trip to Bourbon Street (gotta catch some beads too) and a long, fast road is likely in my future.

In AZ it is still a quite popular sport! It is underground in smaller crowds but you better be fast to play. We have several real, drive them on the street type cars that can run in the 8's and a huge host of 9 and 10 second cars. All deals take place on deserted country roads and usually include many preset races in the same night. Then all will be quiet for weeks... keeps the trail cold for the "Man." Good news!!! My Pontiac currently holds the title as I have not lost in a long time. All glory is fleeting and some are closing in.... So, an IAII is in the works

I run on the track a lot. Truth is, it is not nearly as fun as the street gatherings

Sundays at Bradenton are something you have to see to believe. I've had to move the car out of the way of big money boys coming up through the staging lanes more than once.

Still used to street race alot 6 or 7 years ago.
It is a rush. Of course we always raced real late at night on roads out in the country with no traffic.

I had a buddy of mine spend the night in jail a few years ago just watchin racin on the Gandy bridge in Tampa/St. Pete one night. They arrested and jailed 25 or so spectators.
Bad part was he tried to bail out but couldn't use his own wallet (it was in his car) and didn't want to call his wife. LOL.

I've been there. Worst I had was when I just finished an engine for the T/A, jumped in it for a short test drive (you see where this is going huh!) in just a pair of shorts cause I peeled the shirt off to keep the seats clean. Pass a cop about a mile from the house... all he sees is a punk shirtless kid (I'm 35 and still can't grow a beard in a year) in a loud cause you can't keep a 9 second ride quiet no matter what you do date rape mobile. When I get stopped smoke billows from the car, you know, the new motor oily smoke, my eyes are all bloodshot from 2 hard days of thrashing, the interior is out so no insurance card, shorts had no pocket so no ID, cell phone is in the garage so I can't call for help... It was ugly!!! Yep, sobriety tests, drug tests, never in my life been accused of smoking dope so much in so little time as those 4 squad cars full of smokeys. Master Card said it best- Priceless!

My buddy just bought one of your scoops for his T/A. I'll be putting it on for him tomorrow.

Not as bad as yours, But I just got the new 455 running in my 67 lemans, and the juice hooked up,The engine had about 1000 miles on it out of my 69. so after a longggggggg nite I take it out open headers,No hood,ect. only wearing shorts, no shoes,shirt,wallet. well I go to the local SPOT to show it off a bit...after a great burnout, a cop pulls up just as I hit the juice. got me for all kinda things, and said I tried to run, I said no, before I saw you I hit the juice, car goes on a wrecker, I go to the "office" and the best part was when they searched me (only wearing shorts) he says what's in your pockets I say Nothing but my nuts.... I didnt mean it the way it sounded, but when they checked my pockets, there were lots of nuts..LOL. since I had all kinds after the fresh install...live and learn, I never have seen so many cops burst out laughing.... oh and my ticket was only $55. and the $38 for a tow,

I street raced a LOT back in the late 70's early 80's, but that was a different time. Never caught, but chased many times, it got where whenever a Gold TA did anything they assumed it was Holmberg… (My Father liked to listen to his Police scanner at night)

I was on Gandy the other night (Running about 75) and was passed so fast by a 4th Gen that all I could hear was the force of air moving before the car got there. Sounded like an airplane... I'd bet at least 165+

I have this old blister, a 1931 Ford coupe with a 455 Tunnel Ram'd Poncho, 4:11s etc.. Car is what you'd call a "rat rod".
Anyway this dude out of Ohio has this Malibu, 454 BBC.( a 10.5 bracket race car) Relocates up here, Kinda pooked fun at my 455.
We went to Mass for an event in July, he joined us..
As we headed back to motel bouts midnite, who pulls along side? we cruised through a few lites hes still on side of me..I know what he wants, my wife was in the coupe and said "NO NO NO"
At the last lite I'd had enough.. I had open headers so I guess I was cheat'n! Beat him by a half a car length..
Couple a funny things.. Turns out hes an undercover cop for State Police.
oh ya the other... no more pook'n fun at the Poncho..

I've stayed away from this thread because I find the prospect of street racing in the year 2005 to be juvenile. Anyone that does it, or watches it, is a f@$king idiot, and should be removed from the gene pool.

10 years ago, a friend of mine nearly lost his wife while watching a street race after she was hit, and then ran over (literally had burns on her back from the tire tread, no *****). If you want to run balls out for money at the track, fine. To do so on the street is idiotic. It's not 1975 anymore folks (or even 1985)...too many cars on the road, and too much bad history behind it.

The problem in most parts of the country is there is no track to go to. Not even in a 100 miles. Kids aren't going to drive 200+ miles to race. Just one reason (of many) that at least one golf course in every area should be turned into a dragstrip. Have I mentioned what a waste of property a golf course is? Funny to start a uncorked race engine up about the time one of those no lifers is in mid swing at t off though !

I've seen some scary clapped out pieces of ***** racing in milwaukee, some trailered racers in phoenix, and worked on blown and sprayed cars in San Antonio. It's just not my deal. I'd rather be where it's ok to do a smokey burnout and you've got pros all around you if something goes wrong. I've seen guys get sideways mid pass on the street with cars parked on both sides of the road! people all up and down the street sitting on cars watching, just waiting to get hit. No thanks.

I know where you are coming from on this one. I remember those days where I thought I knew it all. It's one thing to play around pulling through a couple gears and another to all out HAUL ASS through the streets. To many things can go wrong. I like to play myself but I'm not going back to the bad old days again either. Had a guy get killed a few years ago here after the big local car show, Cool Desert Nights. Him and a bunch of guys went out to the local hot spot and got to it. His throttle stuck and he was a little drunk and I guess he didn't think of shuting down. He tried to make the corner at 140mph and it didn't work. I think his son was 12 and he was waiting back in the hotel room for his dad to come back. He didn't. How would you like to be the one that had to tell that kid. On top of that he might have lived if he had put his harness on. Seat belts save lives.

While I agree 100% that it may not be the best thing to race on the street especially like it was years ago. However the love of the street race is still out there. Racing on the street is nothing at all like racing at the track. Its like comparing apples to oranges.

When I was in high school we use to have street races set up for select few people. These are the races I used to love to get into. Just you, your opponent and miles of empty road in front of you. Now while I lived in the county and we had many clear roads, old airports, etc... to race on it was alot safer for us. I have been to some city races where it is just insane to watch let alone race with the amount of people and cars around the racers the full length of the roadway.

As with anything else in life its only as safe as the people that are involved.

As I said I can see where alot of trouble can be had with street racing but if its done resposably then the only ones that get hurt (or should) are those that are racing.

Trouble is (at least for me). When I've had enough of someone its time.. I know its dumb, but I picked my my spot on last race. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've back off a street race.. Going to the track IS the way to go indeed..
Howzever last year two different cars wanted to race my coupe pretty bad. After two months of "smack" talk I offered to run both guys best of 3 at New England Dragway.
Both backed out the week before race day.. Go figure..

The problem with street racing is its not about who has the faster car anymore, its about who's got the biggest balls. If you beat someone by the time you are in 3rd gear whats the point of going on when they are 5-6 car lengths behind. But they don't want to look stupid so they go flying by you at over 100mph, whats the point? You won and stop and they keep going. Anyway that is what I think is the problem.
