Steve, we just had some discussion about the stripes on the First Gen Firebird list, and it came to light that the assembly manual is wrong. It shows the outer stripe as 1/4" and the white space as 1/8". This is opposite the production cars.

The reprinted assembly manual page with this info is dated February 24, 1969. My guess is there might have been a revision that was not in the original used to make the reprint.

Right....now tell the folks at Pheonix Graphics as they sent me a mismatching stencil kit when they striped my car ! The sizes of the stripes were different in width on the trunk lid and roof panels. Fortunatly, the stripes were done without the kit.

I'm not telling that stripe vendor anything. Besides, I see no good reason to spend money on a stencil kit for straight stripes.

You might have installed the stencils before the paint had "gassed out". Failure would then not be the kit, but the user. I had this problem with stripes on a GMC Motorhome that the customer was in a hurry; we laid them on too soon against our better judgement, and it took two more days to strip and repaint. 3M technical folks told us about the paint gassing time being too short.

Nah... my shops been doing resto's including all types of stripes, flames, airbrush applications for 20 years. My car sat for 5 days prior to stencil application after the cameo white was applied and besides stripes varying in width was not caused by improper application. The main spacing tape was not releasing the stencil. Usually a sign that they had been subjected to high heat or dried out with age. They used Pheeonix for several years and on other decals this has happened from time to time.
To answer the pin placement on the hood, it is 5 inches back from the front edge of the hood to pin center and 3.75 from the side. You have to have some room in the hood openings to allow for the arc of the hood closing on the pins.

thank you steve for the pin placement , when i measure back 5" from the front of the hood there is no place to atach the pin to that looks flat or strong enough to hold the hood down, like to know where the pins atach on the core support area, i need something strong as i will not have the factory latch, my hood is a fiberglass repo. you can send me an e-mail at [email protected] . if you have any more info for me.

I don't know where to place on the rad core but my quess would be anywhere you are comfortable with. The placement I originally gave you is where they mount on the fender gusset to front end support. Are you missing these?? If the surface is not flat enough for the pins you need only to slightly bend the fender gusset support. This will give you all the support you need to keep the hood down.

yes i have that part on mine just didnt think it was the right place to mount them. if you could find them in your TA manual and e-mail it to me would be helpful, if its not to much trouble.

It is not mentioned on where to place them in any assembly, maintenance or part manual. They were in the dealer accessory manual and that is all I have ever found referance to them. There were so many places to put them so I am sure the ealers put where ever they could.

FBracer, for what it is worth, It is better to drill the fender gusset supports as you can have a replacement pair should you get a steel hood. It is tougher to replace the radiator support.
