The only real reason to run full grooved bearings is to insure oil supply to the rod bearings thru 360 degrees of crank rotation which is only necessary on non crossdrilled cranks.Their maybe a slight reduction in rotational friction because of less surface area but for me I would prefer less bearing loading with greater surface area.

I love the 428 combo. Going back to it with the bigger procharger.
Rash getting beat by a small block. The shame ou it all. 428 crank in a 400 block. [img]tongue.gif[/img] I think it is the best "Pontiac" combo they ever came out with. The right bore/stroke. rod ratio, head capability to cu.in, etc. Just need to reduce that massive main area. Now, sbc big end rods in a Pontiac, hummmmmmmmm But then the cubic inch wars started and it fell by the wayside. I like it with aluminum rods and E-heads...twist that puppy 7400/7600 all day long and...... Let those E-heads breath. Right Larry N. Remember; rpms = hp. hp = mph.

P Dude,
Glad you are continuing with the Pro-Charger/carb work. Saw your ad for the small unit for sale and thought for a while that you had given up on the blowers and were back to NOs. Are you using the olds bearing to allow the 428 crank in the 3 inch main block? Rodney Butler is using the SBC rod journal set-up on the turbo crank (366+) blank I sent him. 1900 hp so far so must work. I have a set of long Bill Miller BBC aluminum rods (6.885)that I thought about putting on a 428 crank too but have not gone farther with the project. What aluminum rods do you prefer? Tom V.

Yep, gonna try and step it and go for the D3R. Talked to ATI for about an hour. They recommended it as you can always detune, but you can't get more with a smaller Charger. Sorta the shape I'm in now. picking up alot more info too, but ...........shhhhhhhh.
In St. Louis at the last NSCA race. There was an early Nova that went...8.67@167 on a "BFG Drag radial"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with a D3R blowing thru a carb............and no innercooler. there's other ways and tricks. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm into the shorter rod deal with power adders.....But won't go into that speed secret here. And going back to a smaller cu.in to kill the bottom end torque to launch the car on a limited tire. Always liked the 428. Besides, it won't take much on the leave to pull Rash. When I first decided to go Charger, There wasn't a lot of blow thru technology 6 years ago. And the biggest unit was the P1200B I'm currently using. I ran 10.10@137 way back then, but it was tapped out and needed to go faster in that Drag Radial class for Orlando, so I went back to the NOS.....Gotta have NOS. Hahahahahaha I Have gotten more, but the limits finally reached. ATI was amazed that I'm running that fast with a Street unit. And Picking up a lot of info now-a-days just surfing the web. LOL. Now ya tell me about the 400/428 thing. I just sold all my 400 4 bolt blocks!
Maybe I'll get lucky and somebody will return one. HMMMMM, I still got a 350 block I could steal from my kid, naa It'd never work. I wonder how far you could punch and stroke a 350 block? As usual, I ask a simple question and get a lot
of good info but not the answer to the question. I will ask again. Are you using the OLDs bearing with the 400 block and 428 crank? Tom V.

Tom, I have an empty engine compartment that could use one of your dead in the water projects or anything in the works needing to be tested! We could be up and running in a couple days!
They are street racing out in Flint tonight and my car is dead! I'm going out anyway, so when I'm at my computer at 4:00AM crying to anybody that will listen you will know why.

How close is the fit of the olds thrust bearing with the block and crank other than reducing the journal size are any other modifications needed?????

Journal bearings are self-feeding so long as the load isn't directed too close to the feed hole in the bearing. The load bearing film will be thousands of psi pressure, the feed somewhat less than that. The comprimise seems to be one of trading bearing area against viscous drag and good oil supply, and for higher RPM applications, one must be closer to the 'ideal' comprimise of enough bearing area to carry the load, but not so much that viscous drag will get the oil in the bearing too hot. What is this 'ideal' comprimise....'haven't the foggiest, 'guess that's why P-dude has a very attentive audience on the subject.... |

If I gave you this info(That I spend a good deal of time developing and experimenting) then you wouldn't need my spacers, etc. Hahahahahahahaha.
