Chris, from what I understand and remember, they stopped using the st. st. sock when they determined the continuous roving material was not damaged or blown out over time. Like the RacePro, we use it in our VOE muffler project because the sound absorbing material we chose is a mat and is not continuous roving. The st. st. prevents the material from being blown out.

How does the crossflow compare to a set of mufflers in respect to power loss?

Based on the high flow rate, both versions should be equivalent to some of the best flowing 2.5" single mufflers available now. I'd be interested in some more "sound" opinions. Anyone else have theirs on and running and if so,would you mind sharing your thoughts? Tom

I have mine on a 69 Bird with a 455. I replaced a flowmaster 2.5" kit with the transverse muffler and and a Dr.Gas X pipe. I absolutely love the new setup. With the flowmaster the "drone" was enough to make your teeth hurt. With the new system when cruising on just the primaries it is quiet enough that I can actually hear the radio or carry on conversation with a passenger. When you romp on it the sound really opens up to a more throaty sound. Not as loud or aggressive as the flowmaster, but you definitely know it's there. At a cruise-in I have stopped into a few times several people commented on how "nice" the car sounded as I pulled in.

Thanks for the info Tom. My new project (70 Formula) has a homebuilt mandrel bent 3" system with a crossflow muffler and tailpipe kit( 2.5"). I really like the looks of having the exhaust tucked up underneath. Makes it a little tough to work on the rear-end in the car. I have the Flowmaster Force II muffler and it is too loud for a sleeper. If performance is equilavent to having 2 mufflers, I may add some small resonators to make it a little quieter. I have run 11 teens in a 3600lb car with 2.5" system and super turbos. THese Pontiacs seem to respond well to some backpressure.

Well, after driving the car a bit more than when I initially installed the system, I believe I'm going to pull the muffler and reverse it so the exhaust flows in toward the louver openings.
It seems that the sound I want just isn't there. For lack of a better term, it reminds me of a "whoosh" sound, like that of a vintage glasspack but not crackly. Maybe its the fact that the characteristics of exhaust flow over the louvers may have something to do with it. In comparison to the sound clips provided on the Pypes site, its not the same. I hope that reversing it will bring on a better throaty sound like the "clip" with the '76 t/a. Chris or Tom, how was the muffler installed on that car in regards to flow?

sorry, I missed this. The 455 TA has the muffler installed so the exhaust flows over the louvers as apposed to into the louvers.

sorry, The car has RA manifolds with a low 13 second 455 motor.
