The Optima I had was from Interstate Battery, and it stopped holding a charge after 2 1/2 years...

It's normally more expensive for a manufacturer to make two versions of the same product. more likely one version is made and then tested at the end of the line. If the product is functional, but maybe different on some specification, it may then be graded differently and sold as a different model with reduced specs. I doubt if two such versions would be sold as the same model.
