"ohio crank they had some typos on the web site. ALL BUT A COUPLE are for bbc rods.

lets assume that the 4.21 crank is pontiac rods and lets assume that
the 3.75 crank is pontiac but what about the 4.21 3" main 400 crank
shown? Guess someone will have to call Ohio.

Just wondering.

What does the steel look like Dark? shiny? etc on the counterweights

Tom V.

The forged Scat crank is very dark in comparison to the billet. I'll post comparison pics if you are interested. Have not done the "ring" thing.

Tom, I know they all mainly get out good products, soem have a higher % of problems than others(eagle in the early days). My machinist had one high dollar Oliver rod out of a set they had torqued dry when they machined them. Retorqued with the correct lube the big end was not in round. With Oliver reputation you would not have expected it. Why a good check on every part going in to a motor is a good idea.

The darkness on the material is from nitriding.

We have a 4.25" stroke, 3.25" main crank headed this way as we type. I ordered it Friday. It WAS in stock. He tried to sell me the entire kit, but without Eagle rods, I'm not doing them. We've had problems with Scat and C.A.T. rods in the past. The "Ohio Crankshaft" rod is the same as the other generic H-beams (no "third" rib).

The BBC journal on the 400 crank is for racers, not replacers. The stock crank is fine for up to 700 HP, with some minor changes. The BBC rod journal gives the crank better high rev potential. So if you want to build a high-revving Pontiac, this is the crank for you!

I'll post measurement results when the Ohio crank gets here.

We also have a Scat 4" (3" main) stroke forging in here right now. Good looking crankshaft. We'll see how good when it goes to the balance shop.

Glad there are more options coming out for those 3.25 main blocks some of us still use.

Heck I'm tone deaf and always having ringing in my ears!

PS I'll be hitting it pretty hard with NO2 in a factory block to start then I may put one in the IA2.

Now I almost wish I would not have cut my 5140 crank down to 3" mains.I have 1000$ into it now.I could have kept it as is for 400$ and bought a 3"x4.25' for 600$ and have 2 forgings for the money I have into my crank.Oh well at least it is a made in the USA crank and now 65 pounds. At any rate, finaly we have forgings like everyone else for the same kind of money.

So the 400 crank (3.75" stroke) is a Chebby rod and available.

So SCAT is also on the bandwagon, selling the Chinese Pontiac forgings? Around $600?

Bobzdar,

What's wrong with improving geometry and durability? Eagle and others offer a BBC rod in a 6.635" length (plenty "close enough"). That .050" in rod journal diameter is the difference between an engine notorious for rod bearing issues (Pontiac) and one that is not (BBC).

I suppose I don't fully understand the "leave it alone" mentality when dealing with mid-level and high-end race engines. These cranks aren't exactly intended for "replacement" use, as there is no need for such a strong crankshaft under 700 HP.

Maybe you could explain your rationale?

Jim

Jim, surely by now you've figured out that, by and large, Pontiac guys are notoriously cheap. When they hear about Chevy journal size, they assume a non-Pontiac length rod, which also means a custom piston. They therefore automatically assume this comes with a "custom" price which is more than OEM spec Pontiac parts, when in reality, they're wrong (unless they're bent on using "TRW" replacement pistons and cast rods).

Sorta like the why buy E-heads cause I have to now buy round port headers.

If people are determined to use Pontiac size rods. I can supply .050 rod bearings for the BBC rod journal size.

FWI, a few days ago I had a conversation with an individual that was installing a new forged crank from Ohio Crankshaft and he had a few small issues with fit at the front of the unit. Nothing serious and similar to other aftermarket cranks from time to time.

Brian,

I'm painfully aware of the frugal members... But they wouldn't ante up for a $600 crank, either!

I really am looking for someone to explain to me, WHY? Or maybe more accurately, WHY NOT?

This is not a "new thing" (smaller rod journals). Federal Mogul supplied .060" under AP-style bearings for racing Pontiacs "back in the day" ('60s). They knew then, about the bearing speed issues. There just weren't any "off the shelf" rods like there are today.

You can't. You have to have the metal content anal yzed.
