Swimming pool acid works pretty good also. You have to be very careful though and have lots of ventilation. I use it for the washing machine drain once in a while.
My tub would never drain right after I had the bathroom remodeled and I finally pulled the trap and along with lots of slimey stuff I found an old gasket the dipstick had dropped in when he replaced the tub.
