It's got 4-10 gears, and has a posi. My Day looked at the flex plate and it just lost a bolt and another of the three was loose. The frame mounts are good too.

Seriously, leave that 12 bolt under it parts are generally cheaper to buy for them and it's a stronger unit than the BOP diff.Not that you'll beat on it.

Looks like a decent builder for a rust belt car. A little duct tape, some tinfoil and Bondo and you'll be all set! Right Mike [ Region Warrior]? In fact it looks a lot like his when he bought it.

Yes, all 1969 Firebirds had 160 mph speedos. Looking at your trim tag, looks like Code 72 72, which would be Carousel Red. The 8th digit in your VIN will tell you whether it was a V8 or L6. If the 8th digit is a '1', it's a V8. If it's a "6", then it's an L6.

No 12-bolts in the 67-69 Birds, but the Chevy 12-bolt is worth some money. I have a B-O-P 12-bolt (bolt in axles) in my 69, believed to have come from a 70 Trans Am.

A lot of parts from a 69 Camaro fit, but most are incorrect (visually) for a Firebird. Most of the 1969 Firebird parts are unique to the 69 Bird, so be prepared to start seeing parts catalogs that list a part for "67-68" or "70-up", and the special 1969 parts are usually at a premium.

72 72 also means that it most likely did not come from the factory with a vinyl top as you feared... thats a good thing.
You still plan on pulling the PHS docs so as to know what you purchased? I would.

4.10 gears are not very good behind a Pontiac, but, I sure would not give up the 12 bolt rear end. No matter what. Just have it rebuilt with something more streetable 3.55 or 3.23.

Looks good otherwise MA, I will rummage thru some boxes, I have one of the light buckets...

Her right one is busted up beyond repair, I think the left one is ok or might have a small crack.

My Mom is a stickler for the correct look, so not sure that 12 bolt will be staying. I came home last night and she was on her back on the trailer, under the car taking the traction bars off. LOL Threw em in a pile next to the trash can LOL.

I too want to build a '69 T/A clone, but mine will be a few years off in the distance. I need to build a bigger garage 1st before I start adding to my collection. I'm not letting the current toys sit outside while I restore another one

Well there's one for sale in Bangor PA we walked away from with a $1800.00 stacked guage cluster in it. To far gone for my Wifes liking to restore. it's in the classifieds here, under 69 Hardtop, MaryAnn posted pictures.

Well just get rid of the aluminum cover and replace with a stock steel piece and it will look much better.

Thanks for the heads up, but as I stated, it'll be a few years before I get into another big project. I'm enjoying the GTO and making plans for a nice garage. I currently have a 2 car residential garage that I do all my work in/store my GTO, Truck, & bike in. It is starting to get overrun by my 3.5 yr old's toys.

So how exactly how would one know what gears are in a rear? The guy who had this car told my Mom that it has 4.10 gears, but where is that number or how do you know this info for sure? Where are "the codes"?

Code may be stamped on the front of the RH axle tube but the gear set could have been changed out so thats not foolproof.

You could jack up the rear and count how may times the driveshaft turns while turning the rear wheel one full revolution.......that'll give you an idea what the ratio is.

Or pull the cover and see whats stamped on the ringgear.

yep, but not for awhile nothing will happen with this car for probably 2 years, accept collecting parts for it, as my parents are trying to build a new house and 40' X 80' pole barn for the toys.

Heres pics, you can see its on the right/pass front side, it has all the info, like gear set code, date code..and that lillte E means Eaton Posi..do some research...a factory 4.10 code BE rear can go for 5 grand PLUS..mabe more its a COPO code
