The off idle stumble problem you discribe could be caused by a lean air/fuel mixture.We have found that most of the aftermarket carter AFB & AVS clones are both lean off idle and have a accelerator pump squirt that is not as strong as it needs to be. there are some pics of what we do to cure the problems in a article that can be found at http://www.webrodder.com/article.php...SID=60&CID you may need to enlargen the ICR (idle channel restrictor) and use a accelerator pump with a stronger duration spring to solve the problem that is being covered up by overadvancing the ignition spark advance.

First off I want to thank you to everyone that has chimed in on this you've given my alot great info! And as more and more of you talk it really sounds like this cam that came with the motor (ie. I didn't choose it haha) is ALL wrong so I'm leaning toward changing it out for something less crazy!! So once aain thanks guys

That Crower 60916 ([email protected] 221/229 [email protected] 455/470 LC 112) is a lot of cam for an 8:1 compression 350 engine as "QUICK-SILVER" pointed out, it probably wouldn't perform all that great in an 8:1 400 either.
A cam swap would wake it up, something like the Crower 60240 ([email protected] 210/221 [email protected] 422/446 LC 112) should be a pretty good match for a low-compression 350. |

Ok so let me see if I got this right? As throttle in creases manifold vaccuum should decrease and so should the vaccuum advance right? Well if I have that right there something going on with my motor because manifold vaccuum does not decrease when throttle is applied it only goes higher! Upwards of 20"! Does this sound unusual or did I misunderstand

Manifold vacuum is accessed from within the manifold plenum a direct and constant suck from the cylinders. It is what it is. Should remain constant until VERY high rpm under heavy load.
Ported vacuum is accessed from a carb port that leads to a opening behind one of the throttle blades. As the throttle blade opens and air rushs through the narrow opening between carb throat wall and blade it creates a low pressure area and this is where the ported vacuum comes from. As the throttle blade opens further from throttle bore sides the low pressure decreases and the ported vacuum strength drops. The factory used either and or both vacuum sources for distributer advance over the years. Today either will work well but you must understand what you want from it before choosing and using. At highway cruise speeds very high total advance is often seen and used to good advantage for example: 16 locked in initial, 20 additional from mechanical, 20 advance from vacuum. total 56º. Or some variation of those numbers. Every motor is an individual. |

so basically what it all boils down to is the cam in the engine is POS! well not a good choice for my application! Man i wish i would have known all this about a year ago when the engine was still on the stand and not cruisin my butt down the street!! I would have kicked that bumpstick to the curb

and the crappy thing is is this was the cam that came with the long block when i bought it! and to be honest i dont know **** about cams so i had no idea!! but live and learn ya know!

If you have a friend who will loan you a different carb for a test, I think you may find your problem.
When Pontiac was still using square-bore carbs (the Carter AFB), they used a 575 on the V-8 engines up to and including the 421. Only after converting to the spread-bore design did Pontiac start using 750's on their V-8 engines. Square bore 750: Primary - 375 CFM Secondary - 375 CFM Spread bore 750: Primary - 150 CFM Secondary - 600 CFM No, a 750 is not too large for a Pontiac 350 (I have an 800 spread-bore on mine); but a square-bore 750 is (my opinion) much too large for a street 350, especially with an automatic transmission. You flood the engine with AIR; thus you run much too lean. Also, primary venturi air velocity is much too low. Jon.

Jon, I've heard several different sizes quoted for the AFB's used on engines like the '65 421. Were they 575 cfm's?

ok so if i do get a new carb then i should make sure its for a pontiac. did holley do the same stuff with the calibration for different motors as carter did or will i be good with any holley?

My guess would be that if you find a loaner carb and prove what I am suggesting about the original carbs; that you would be able to find someone that would swap you an original Pontiac core, and probably pay you "boot" as well. I will say that I do have the ability to make the required changes if needed. What size carb do you think I should run? All I want here is my engine to run and run well plain and simple! Is there any changes to my current carb that would make it perform better? Maybe down sizing the jets or upsizing for that matter!
