Matt, I've had trouble with them too. It isn't just that shifter. What I ended up doing, I took a piece of 1/4" rod and used it for a staight edge to get the angle for the cable. It only takes 1 time to mess the cable up. I cut the indents down on the comb inside the trans, and take some of the tention off the spring. I make mine so they shift real easy, so I don't jam the cable. I use a electric solinoid to shift the th350 in my sons car. Ud think these cables would be much better for what they cost. I've never had a problem with a factory cable, and I've had quite a few birds over the years. I've got brand new cables from Summit before that were bad. Always check them before you install them. If there is any resistance when moving them by hand send them back.

Matt I ran a Hurst Qtr stick same issues(68 firebird). I ran the next size longer cable than came with the shifter. Had to relocate cable hole in floor closer to firewall and a little bit closer to my u joint underneath, but noticed drag on cable was much less with the "looser" loop.

Cable was B+M heavy duty not standard.
I had the car 4 years after that and no issues. Lots of street miles too. (full manual valve body)

I have seen guys have problems due to exhaust heat too. They dont like getting cooked.

Matt, reread Bud Lyons post and make sure the engine is grounded well to both the body and the frame.

Often the shifter cable ends up acting as the primary ground path if there is no better path for it to use,and that leads directly to rapid shifter cable deterioration.

Very common problem, especially in older cars with poor body/chassis grounding.

FWIW

Hey Bret! I tell ya what, I made it a point to really make sure the engine was grounded good. got a big grounding strap from the front of the pass side head to the frame, and then another good one from the back of the pass side head to the firewall. I would think this should be sufficient...

glad to hear I aint the only one who's had troubles with these. was hopin to bring it down to POCI event in bowling green and maybe make a pass or two, but won't be able to fix this in time I'm afraid. oh well.

the current ruined cable is 5' long. next size up is 8'. should I try the 8' cable this time?

also gonna fab a new mount for the shifter, raise it up, pull it back some, and angle it to give the cable a better angle to hopefully avoid this problem in the future.

I don't have a B&M Pro, but i do have a Z Gate and WHEN i was running the stock pan u have to use those spacers to clear the lip on pan which kinda binds the cable, Now with the nice cast pan I don't need those spacers cause its flat and the shifter is very smooth now!

Matt, I have a cable you can have. You know where I live, or I can meet you somewhere.

Ihad issues with my pro stick when I had the th350 in the car. Had one frey and come apart where it attached to the straight steel part. I couldnt get the adjustment right either. Now I have a th 200 4R, I changed the shift gate and it works so much better than before.

got it all back together finally last night. haven't test driven yet, but sitting in the garage, the shifter/cable operate MUCH more smoothly. I think I've finally gotten it straightened out. never was able to get it near this smooth with everything connected using the 5' cable.

gonna try to get it out tonight or sometime before Norwalk anyways.

I won't be able to make it to norwalk in time for Test and Tune sessions on friday, so I guess I'll leave the car behind. aint near nice enough to be trying to show. all I'd be able to do is cruise around a little.
