this is all BS
now you guys know you got some good stories that actually happened to you ,,,let hear those so ill start
3 days after being in germany i was in the motorpool and a guy sent me to the stock room to get some "liquid track tensioner" and to hurry as we had to go recover a tank out in the training field and we were in a rush to go
i run to the stock room all out of breath and blurted out i need some "liquid track tensioner"..
he looked at me without saying anything so i repeated myself and told him i need it right now
needless to say that stayed with me a long time
and now one for our cars
when i first met my wife,,,she bought a new 76 amc hornet and since it was under warranty i thought nothing of it but she drove 60k on the same oil and filter ,,,till it locked up
and yes i had to rebuild it

Back when I was still running my little Auto repair shop some Hispanic guy came up and asked me to check out his 79 Firebird. He claimed they had just rebuilt the engine and they could not get it started. I went to his place and in the garage was a freshly painted Firebird with what looked like a brand new engine installed. I asked him if it was popping or making any noise when they turned it over. He said no. After checking a bit closer I noticed that there was no dipstick in the block. At that point he handed me a box of parts that his buddy gave him. "Do you know what these are for?" He asked. He was shocked when I started to swear out loud infront of him. @#$%!@#%@% ect...
Then I told him that if he wanted his car to run I would have to pull the engine and go through it again. He asked why?

The box contained.
Oil pump
Timing chain and concentric.
dipstick tubes and windage tray.
Lots of the internal small bolts needed.

Needless to say He was also pissed. But when I finished redoing his engine he was very happy with the power and performance it had. Oh and it fired right up when I finished building it.

I convinced a former employee of mine when he was a newbie that if a car I bought was older model he had to change the air in the tires because it got stale from being in there so long.

Sure enough my salesman, after I had left, seen him out on the lot letting the air out of tires on a 88 bronco, so he ask him WFT are you doing??????????

Ahhhhhhhhhh, well Rich says we got change the air, he about fell over on the ground from laughing

Get yourself a 61-63 tempest and sit back and listen to the BS one person will tell another about these cars. Most don't know there a unibody and the trans is in the back. Got 421 sd and the 2x4 carbs and they see the326 emblem on the grill and tell there friends its a 326 Big Block. Did you know those 421s got in the there cause the ran out of 326 and didn't want too stop production. LOL The remarks go on and on.

Had a good one this week also. What engine is that? 421 sd----I got that engine in my Pontiac-----what heads you got? RAM Air Kinda lost it with that guy.

We had a salesman that called on us. He had an '83 Mercury Marquis in '85. One day he parked it right out front. We could hear the lifters making noise. Guy that worked for us said, "Donald, how many miles you got on that thing?" He beamed and said, "199,000!". John says, "When was the last time you changed the oil in that thing?" Donald got all confused looking and said, "What do you mean?" We said you know changed the oil and filter. His response was, "What do you mean, I just put more in when it gets low."

We totally cracked up on that one. You could tell the guy just had no idea at all that was something you needed to do.

That might not be the dumbest, but is is real close and makes you real careful if you buy a used vehicle.

I was at a mechanic friend's shop last year this time and he had a beat up old Ranger or similar that he had there w/ MA tags on it. I asked him about it. He said that someone had brought it in after driving it 1500 miles from MA b/c it was making clacking noise the whole way. Drove it all the way here with around 1 1/2 qts. of oil in it. They thought that is where the level was supposed to be on the stick.

I love that stuff b/c it shows what an engine will actually tolerate and gives perspective to arguments about oil types, longevity etc.

Had a neighbour come over asking if I could look at his car as it wasn't idling right and oil was going everywhere. He had just done an oil change. Only problem was that when he filled up the engine, he filled it right up!!!, until it was overflowing from the top of the rocker cover (inline six).
He did wonder why he had to put so much more oil in then what he drained out.

Same neighbour a while later asked if I could help him get his spark plugs out. I discovered tha when he did his oil change he also changed his plugs. They were the tapered ones but instead of just nicking them up he screwed them in as tight as possibly could. I did manage to finally get then out but 3 of the 6 broke in the head and had to carefully remove the ceramic so I could use easy outs and heat.

You hear everything at cruise nights... With my '69 GTO I've heard: It ain't a real GTO unless it has tri power.... It must be a judge-It has hide aways,they only put them on judges... Same goes for a hood tach- Judges only. Easier to just go with it instead of correcting folks. Life's too short. I'll never hear the end of the big block Pontiac...Ugh...

You guys probably dont get this as much in the US....but around here I'm well known in my area as the guy with the 'Mustang' or even 'Cadillac' the closest anyone has ever come was 'Camaro'. It's actually a '69 F/bird vert, but whos cares, people scream 'Mustaaaang!!!' everywhere I go.


There was this guy, wanted to buy my 69 GTO. I was showing him some car pics on my PC, he leaned forward to get a better look at this car and asked..."What car is that?" I replied, "Its a '71 Plymouth Barracuda". He looks at me like I'm nuts and says, "Thats not a Barracuda, I had one & it looked nothing like that!"
I stood 'corrected'!

The car he owned was actually a South African Valiant Barracuda, which is identical to the first gen Plymouth Barracuda, only rhd.

I had taken my boyfriend to the track because he stated he was a car guy and liked the races. We stopped by a friend of the family's trailer to say hi and see how his day was going so far. I told my boyfriend about his car that it was a 70 GTO JUDGE and my dream car. My boyfriend then asked "Why did you name it the Judge?" Needless to say I dumped him the next day.

I rent a space in one of those 'self-storage' buildings here.

Well about 4 years ago the guy that owns the building bought a decent 79 T/A because he had one he bought new.

It does not have the original engine and the guy he bought it from told him it was a 400 or 455. When he takes it to shows he tells people that it has a 410 in it. I have no idea where,why or how he came up with that.

I have a pic of my GTO on my screensaver at work. One guy asked why I painted over the chrome on my bumper. I explained that it was an endura bumper,it came like that from the factory. He still thinks I'm BS'ing him.

One of my favorites was the dork (complete with adoring girlfriend hanging on every word), who was going on about his FRIENDS "all original" 67 GTO with the factory 454 and a six pack that could lay rubber for a block from a standing start in 4th gear!!!! I just smiled.
