Obviously you didn't read the article where it states that the hero innovators of the day, Smokey Yunick and Banjo Mattews, Holman Moody etc. are the reason that the cars evolved from showroom cars into purpose built dedicated 100% race cars. NASCAR isn't who started changing the cars. The innovators that you guys go on and on about in these threads were primarily responsible because they wanted their cars to be faster, safer, and more innovative cars than their competition. Your blame is in the wrong place.

Nascar is nothing more than a "parade of sponsors" nowadays.

Qualifying speeds were faster 30 years ago than they are now. Daytona 500 pole sitters ran 200mph+ in the early 80's.

Surely safety and technology has come further than this in the last 30 years?

No doubt, especially when you almost NEVER see a driver without his billboard uniform on, or without mentioning the "sponsors" at least twice in every interview.

The mid 80's Thunderbirds were also designed with NASCAR in mind. Not any more......

Personally; when I was a kid, I used to enjoy going to and watching the dirt racers. Last dirt races I attended were over a decade ago, and they were fun to watch for a few heats, but got tired of the grit in my teeth. I equate those tracks more to the Paved short track races and find them now boring.

However: Also, when I was a kid learning how to drive, (my 1968 New Yorker 440cid, and 1956 Cadillac Deville, 1972 Sport Fury, and later my 1973 Malibu) my best friends and I would drive the back dirt and gravel roads pushing the limits making our cars do controlled slides, drifts and fishtails. We would do the same on the back roads in the snow and ice covered 1 ½ lane roads…pushing the limits of traction and adhesion more often than not going off into the snow drifts; digging the cars out and doing it all over again. Crazy kids? You bet your a$$, but we learned how to really drive past the limits in cars that were never engineered to be pushed and tortured like “we fine young men” were pushing them. I can tell you that my New Yorker was nicknamed by me “The Land Yacht” and the speedo saw more 120mph time than “normal speeds”. It was at these times that I really learned how to drive, and gained the knowledge and respect for control at the limits. After digging out a vehicle from the mud, snow and ice a few times, you get the picture that your equipment holds up longer in a cleaner environment like asphalt or concrete. Although it’s much less forgiving than dirt when you F up!

So IMO I understand the thrill of dirt racing and short tracks, but prefer…the hi-speed paved track races; like Daytona, Talladega, Darlington, Texas, etc.

That was another appeal to me for Drag Racing: The pure speed, adrenalin, and relative cleanliness of the cars, crews and tracks racing on the pavement.

I for one will admit that I enjoy the thrill of close competition, and CRASHES that “…and they walked away” from, and “way out there” personalities like A.J. Foyt for example. But then I’m just old school…and could care less what striping package is on the latest “bar of soap” car body.

Really exciting to see people like F1 drivers racing in the rain – wow what a novelty! And, controlled NASCAR sideways slides at 190+mph were the driver gets the out of control back in shape, and weird series like the Truck races…because they almost look like something that I can relate to…a vehicle that I can drive on the street…like an F-150, Silverado, etc. That is what all motor sports are drifting away from IMO: How the average fan can relate with what is in there driveway or garage vs. what they see on the track. Kinda like a modern version of this:

So, not so sure what makes a Chevy a Chevy in modern Nascar…but I can relate to that Pontiac shown above as we have one in our garage.

I loved NASCAR back in the 60's. Then Fireball,Joe Weatherly got killed,Flonty Flock was injured so bad he had to quit. Then Curtis Turner was killed and I didn't want to hear anything about NASCAR. But ever now and then, I would hear about something Smokey Yumick had done and I would get back interested until Big Bill France would outlaw whatever Smokey had come up with and would'nt let him run it. Smokey actually came up with a usable fuel cell in 1964 and Big Bill disallowed it. Bye,bye Fireball. I have read a couple of books written by Smokey. It appears that he and Big Bill were serious enemies. Don't even watch NASCAR anymore. The pretty boys and the stupid Bush brothers just don't interest me. I will admit that Kyle can drive a race car, but I would love to see him and Tiny Lund locked in a room for about 15 minutes if Tiny were still alive.

Chevy to replace Impala in 2013 with another Chevy brand: Chevrolet is developing a new car with a new name for its 2013 NASCAR entry, replacing the Impala used by Team Chevy, and plans to eventually market and sell the new model to consumers.

The dealership and racing versions of the car will be unveiled this year, after the New York auto show in April, spokesman Monte Doran said. The new car will use a nameplate not currently in Chevy's lineup. Neither the car nor its name will be a derivative of an existing one, such as the new Malibu or the upcoming redesigned Impala, Doran said.

General Motors wouldn't reveal details. "We are keeping the wraps on the new car for now and will continue to prepare for next season by testing camouflaged vehicles," Jim Campbell, vice president of Chevrolet performance vehicles and motorsports, said in a statement.

"We know that Chevrolet fans are eager to see the new race car, and we hope that the prospect of being able to own one just like it will make the wait a little more bearable."
