I used to use a pedal car in a "demolition derby" with the kid next door who also had one. Later when I had a "Big Wheel", I rigged up a hand brake out of a piece of wood that I could lock against one of the rear wheels so I could "spin out".Wore the wheel in half on the front and the one in the back.
I hardly ever even see kids riding tricycles or bicycles down the street anymore.

How about the chopper look? Where you cut the fork tubes off of one bike and drive them onto another to create the extended front end!! Good Times!!!

We took my buddy's Schwinn and took the mast off their TV antenna (cable had just come to our neighborhood) and extended his forks 4' each! Flattened out the ends with a hammer, drilled a hole and put on his front tire. Then each of us had to learn how to ride it, but by the end of the day we had all done it!

I think we ALL had blue corduroy pants!!! My youngest sister and I used to sneak out of the house in our most faded jeans. Dad REFUSED to let us wear " those DAMNED dungarees" to school.

i think those lasted forever...i think they had a layer of plastic in all of the material, as i remember cutting the legs off from a pair; and yes the knees had extra. good idea for work clothes really; probably hot tho.
great thread. i went back and bought EVERYTHING i had ever wanted as a child; chopper 5 speed bikes,(i have two for sale); slot cars; sizzlers, tin metal robots with the guns in the chest (super astronaut); and a GTO. |

A few years ago I picked up a second TCR Racing track to go with my original one. In the basement I still have my vibrating football game with the Steelers and LA Rams. I also have many of my model rockets and line control Cox .049 airplane. IIRC, that only landed on the wheels once (LOL)... I wish I knew what happened to all my Stompers, those were great. What is really fun is watching my two boys playing with my original (and rather busted up) Star Wars toys.

I would jump over the back of my big wheel just like Speed Racer did, one day it broke in half and I was sitting on the ground with the handlebars in my hands. We did the chopper bicycles with forks of another bike too. Our favorite was building ramps and trying to outjump the last guy. Then we got mini bikes and go carts, what a hoot. And who hasn't had a good rock fight, or shot with a bb gun?

I remember at age 7 and up playing with fireworks, estes rockets, black gun powder all unsupervised, never blew myself up or caught the fields on fire. We had a steel cannon that my brother made in metal shop that used black powder and packed a punch. Did anyone else make tennis ball cannons with tin cans, duct tape and lighter fluid? Ah the good old days. I would hate to be a child in this modern day.
And yes sadly I had pin striped bell bottoms at one point, that I don't miss. |

Damn things could shoot a tennis bowl well over 100 yards if you put just the right amount of juice in them but you better have a good roll of duct tape handy.

would you believe that this past weekend I had some pre-teen (or maybe 13yo) kids try to scold me for not having a helmet on!?!
LOL stupid ignorant kids apparently didn't know that these retarded laws don't apply to people over 18 years of age... (at least that 's the case around here)
