Espen, I have no idea. I've found 2 factory rear speakers in an early 70's Malibu before, but I've also sold pairs of original cardboard speaker covers & retainer clips to Pontiac guys who were going to install two reconed speakers under their package tray & they knew their cars didn't come that way. The idea that there was only one speaker, in the back didn't always set right with 80's casual restorers who were coming over from the modified cruiser realm. When I first started pulling the speaker covers in the mid 80's, I was dead set on removing my AM-PB & substituting the correct year AM-FM Stereo along with two rear speakers in my GT-37, never did it.

Pat, still have a '72 AM-FM stereo I pulled out of a '72 Lux LeMans & like other factory AM-FM stereos I've pulled before, it also came with 1 factory rear speaker. Don't have a scanner, but will get a copy of that cars buildsheet photocopied & send it to you.

Sorry for the shameless self promotion, but it "sounds" like a RediRad-FM would bring that OEM gear into today.

Looks like a great product Matt. So, that will plug into my 99 Grand Prix and I can eliminate my cassette tape wire connection I use to hear my satellite xm radio? Is the sound better via your route than through the cassette tape?

My 71 had the 405/U58 Stereo Radio, along with the 412/U57 Stereo Tape Player, and both of those are listed on both the invoice and the build sheet. On the build sheet, however, it also shows U8C Rear Speaker. I don't know whether it had one or two speakers, as some previous owner installed two aftermarket speakers in the packaage tray plus two sweet chrome speaker in the door covers. Quadraphonic baby!

I've always understood that the 405/U58 Stereo radio was the "Red Dot" radio that had the red light in the dial that would light up when receiving a stereo signal. Mine does not have that and I have been searching for one since I bought the car. Is that the right radio for a 71?

Yes, that's the correct stereo with the red dot BJ.

Espen, It has nothing to do with being a 72. I have 2 Build Sheets from my car. The info on them is linked to where they were used in the factory and what that area was installing. The one I took of my distributor says "LEVEL 2 Dept. 877, 884, 885" and the one I sent you I found above my sun visor after I took delivery it says "LEVEL 3 Dept 883". You can see 3 Build Sheets if you check out the link below the "Auto-Biography' of my 72 GTO that tells the whole story from ordering on up to present time. Question: Where did you find your Maifest?

BJ The Stereo Radio will also have 2 large tranistors on the back, a mono will only have 1. The correct part number (71-72) is "7930542". Grand Prix is the same except it has Chrome push buttons.
Way way back in 1972, I ordered my new GTO with a mono radio and a rear speaker. The salesman (Ron Hull) upgraded it to Stereo on the order sheet. When the car came in he said the factory had screwed up and I could have have the stereo radio for an additional $75. I told him to put in the mono I had ordered which he did. Maybe that's what happened with your car. By the way I've since installed a stereo radio and it was a lot more then $75.

my understanding is that these stereos are not compatible with 2 rear speakers due to the 10 ohm rating. There is supposed to be a way to hook up two 10 ohm speakers in the rear "in series" if I remember the term right that would not overload the radio but I didn't try it on mine. With my '72 F-body, you either mount a full size spare tire or have a speaker on the right, but not both due to the tight space.

Thanks Bill. I've noticed that the price of these "Red Dot" radios is considerably more than $75 nowadays...if you can find one!

Espen, I'm no expert but I love playing detective with these things. My guess is that yours was used for the final inspection after the car was built. It looks like the box bottom left says OK PLT 8 with a special hole punch next to it. Building 8 was the final assembly building at Pontiac. Does the bottom right box say"Quality Control" "OK to ship"? And I wonder who "Attention J. Black" was at the bottom also.

Bill:
That's a cool plant diagram for the Pontiac plant. Wonder if there is a similar diagram for the other plants - specifically the Fremont, CA plant?

Espen, Did some more research and found this on the "Ultimate GTO Picture" site.
.................................................. .................................................
10 991 (ship to) Regional Warehouse Pool, Pontiac Zone Office in Illinois.
Vehicles shipped there were used for "PR purposes" before being sold
through a dealer. From Jim Stern (jimstern@ameritech.net)
.................................................. .................................................. .
Your "CHARGE TO" box show 25 (Portland, Oregon) and as seen above the "991" would mean it went to the Portland Zone Office. I would guess J. Black worked at the Zone Office. Jim Stern is a local friend of mine, he has a 66 GTO that was a hand built pre-production car.
Here's the website for the Zones and dealer codes.

Sorry to jump in so late for this discussion. I can tell this much. My very late build 1972 GTO came with the AM FM stereo radio and 8 track. It was a two speaker car one front one back. There are two cut outs for rear speakers but all I saw mounted were right speaker and rear window defroster ( yes it came with that one as well) The package tray was drilled for one speaker only. The passenger side was very obviously done after the fact with a size larger drill bit. I don't have that second massive unit shown above the radio in the diagram. I'm guessing it's the multiplex unit?
No speaker boxes but then she was on her 2nd ( or 3rd) home made stereo set up as well. The original front speaker is still there and I have no front-back fader ability so obviously it was in the radio unit. I thought perhaps the 8 track unit had it. never thought to check the dial for "R" on it.
