Interesting build.
The 71(?) HO heads were milled to get CR to 9-1?

You will get into the 11s with ease. I ran 12 flat with the same short block, unported 96s and a flat tappet.
I run a Warrior,850 decent solid roller,Hookers on 91 octane. The car is setup in true drag race only fashion. Thing is, if it were 12-1 on race gas you would not be making THAT much more power. 40HP maybe ? I just bracket race. And I do not understand all the guys that do the same and build high CR engines that need 8-10$ a gallon (or whatever that stuff costs) gas. And have to worry about head gaskets ect. You can make stupid power on pump gas these days. 10 flats or deep into the 9s with almost bolt together aftermarket blocks and aluminum heads onl pump gas. There are plenty of BBCs at our track that run the same or slower than me on race gas and not one of them has near the amount of passes (over 1000) on their engines. Just something about Pontiacs and pump gas as far as I am concerned. |

This motor is eventually going in my 71 Judge. I'm using #197 heads and a two bolt 1971 455 block.

Yes, back in the 65 for another season. The aero coupe has been on the back burner and that's where I had figured to put that motor. Hope to see you at the co-convention.

Yes 1971 #197 heads. The compression ratio is an honest estimate probably more on the high side. Factory claimed 8.4 to 1. These heads had some previous work prior to acquiring them as proven by the initial head flow #'s that Bill furnished. We never cc'd the heads.

My 197s were milled either .040 or .060 to get the CR up. The heads were cc'd and with a 4 valve relief flat top .060 TRW piston the CR is right at 9.3-1.
Whittmore did the work. I bet with a fresh build, true lightweight FT pistons, thin rings, optimized cam and some long billet rods(this will help on iron heads, aluminum, not) I could get the car down to 11.70 range or better. I could turn the 3 step up to 5500 for the launch and see what happens but do not want to deal with whatever weak link shows up. |

For sure will pick up with better carb. I ran my Holley 800 spreadbore on the street for a while and got it tuned in with wideband. Went to the track and car slowed down a bunch with it as opposed to the 850 Holley square bore.

... yeah, actually the 830 we used this time was tuned for a different engine, but we had issues with the fuel fitting needed to run a Demon ( UPS SMASHED THEM !!!) ... ... there are no O2 sensor bungs in th headers we tested, so no A/F's ... ... but the plugs were certainly way too white & crispy for my liking, so we stopped after just a few pulls and decided to wait until we can test with the Demon that was calibrated for this engine by "Shaker455", which i have no doubt will out perform the 830, and hopefully we find a few ponies in the Nascar headers too ... |

Hi Jack, Your Bandit was the first time I had the pleasure of feeling that torque of a real HO 455. Remember it like it was yesterday. Will miss you this year at Norwalk, hope to see you in 2014.

Update #2
... ok guys, Mike & Myself just finished the dyno testing on his 455HO engine today, and we found a bit more power it today, which Mike was happy to see ...
... first we bolted on the Demon carb he bought, which you can see the results on Dyno Test#1 ... ... then we bolted on a set of my Nascar headers that were modded to fit a Pontiac, that is Test#2 ... ... lastly we bolted up a set of 2.0 inch Mad Dog headers, and that is Test#3 ... ... so basically we gained both HP & TQ up to 588.3 HP @ 605.8 TQ @ 4660 !!! ... ... the Nascar style headers were extremely more responsive down low and at 3100rpm were up over 20ft.lbs from our previous best, and they also made an extremely noticable change in the exhaust sound, these are 4/7-3/2 routed headers, so i'm sure that's the cause, but it was also much much louder in the cell, so much so it actually started to hurt our ears in the next room, which was interesting ... ... so obviously we are anxious to get this thing on the track and see what it will do ... |

Needless to say I'm happy with the results from Bill's induction work. And I want to thank Mondello's [Tim Allen] for working with me on this combo. Now it's up to me to run it on the track. The weather forecast doesn't look to good here for the next few days, maybe saturday. Otherwise I'll be at the co-convention to break her in. Also kudos to Jeff Esmel [Shaker 455] for going to bat for me and fixing my carb. He got her done and back to me at warp speed.
