The snout is 1.375" so you want that 1.385 socket. Just make sure it has a threaded collar on it to hold the degree wheel.

Appreciate the info. I've read enough to tell me I need to degree this cam.

67gtospud - I ordered Comp 4798 for the crank socket. I looked, but couldn't find a less expensive one that had the provision for the degree wheel. Hope it does the trick.

I got a crank 'nut' a long time ago, not sure where. I bolt the wheel using the balancer bolt and a spacer, with the nut slipped on before. Only thing is I have to use a big open end wrench, but I'm used to it and don't mind.

Hm, B&B still makes them, think that's the one I have!

Just ran out to the garage and measured my 326 and my 301. Both were 1.375"

A little slow I guess LOL

Is this also the same for the 068 cam?ICL is 113. Anybody got a card for the 068 (melling spc-7), mellings site offers the info but i am clearly not smart enough to apply it diagramatically. Where does everyone else running the 068 install them?
Good info here

Ford crank sockets are the same as Pontiac.

I have run the Melling "068". IIRC the LSA is 115.5 meaning there is 2 1/2 degrees of advance built in to the grind.
I was very disappointed last time I degreed an spc-7. The valve events as well as the duration @ .050 was off more than I would have liked to see. I think I had to retard it 4 degrees just to get the intake closing point close to spec.

P.S. a simple way to figure LSA on melling cams is just to split the difference between the ICL and the ECL. The spc-7 is 113 intake and 118 exhaust (again, IIRC)

Alright so I just ordered the comp crank socket and the summit degree wheel. As well as the rest of the parts I will need to assemble my engine which I'm picking up tomorrow morning!

I placed a similar order this morning. Being close enough to Summit to get things overnight is a blessing and a curse. I ended up spending 1/3 more than I planned on a .010 under timing set because it was the only one I could get by this weekend.

Curious to hear how your Voodoo cam degrees in.

I will let you know how it goes. I also ordered the isky rev lube for the cam and some more paint for my motor, kinda sucks the only place I can get it for a decent price is from summit. Nowhere around me carries the Duplicolor Pontiac Blue Metalic.

Degreed my 10510702 today and it came in spot on at 108. Everything matched the cam card. I was kind of surprised how simple degreeing a cam is. The hardest part was getting the dial indicator mounted securely.

I have a custom ground cam that I bought off somebody else with no paperwork on it. How would I go about finding what ICL to set it for? I don't even know what manufacturer it came from. It's a hyd roller, 230/[email protected] and a 110 LSA.

Well I bought the powerhouse crank socket and summit degree wheel from summit racing. The center hole in the degree wheel is too small to fit the crank socket. Should I drill it out?

I used a stepped drill bit to enlarge mine. Worked great.

Robert, how much traction do you have?

If you have drag radials and a good suspension, I'd install the cam advanced 4.

With so-so traction maybe +2 or straight up.

With poor traction I'd go straight up, possibly even retarded 2.

Default ICL

I haven't run this cam before so I'm not sure what kind of traction issues I'm going to have. I guess I'll just check it and, what's the rule of thumb?, set it 4-6 degrees less than the LSA?

Rule of thumb is to install it straight up for the most part, and I wouldn't advise doing anything but without knowing what the specs are. Without the specs, you can't even choose springs, so it's pretty worthless until you know for sure what it is.

The cam should have a number on it on the rear, and possibly a work order number. Some hand grind the work order number into them. Post that number, someone should be able to ID the make, and with the work order number, you can call the manufacturer and find out what the grind is.

Otherwise, you can add it to that grinder stand.

Well I have posted it before and no one could tell me for sure from the numbers. No matter, I degreed it today and came up with the specs that I expected so I'm good with it. It came out at 230/230 dur @.050 110LSA and 106ICL and .339 lobe lift. Seems to be pretty std numbers except the intake was ground with a slightly different profile. A bit fatter on the leading side of the lobe, IIRC.

I thought about it more after I posted, and you can choose a spring that would be suited for the lobe and intended RPM, doesn't have to be dead on either, there is usually multiple choices. You can also chart the lobe by measuring lift at .100 intervals.

Might even be able to determine the lobe by charting it, but that would require comparing to a lot of lobes (in a catalog), though not sure that would really give you anything useful.
