Thanks Guys!! Going in tomorrow (11/03) for my hip replacement. Anterior approach titanium and cobalt joint. Will heed all your warnings, your replies really helped me out. Hopefully this one goes well, and I can get the right done soon. Sounds like the constipation is one of the worse side effects! Maybe next year I will be able to climb into my 74 and get back out (car has a cage)! JOHN

My mom is 76 ,she had one hip done 30yrs ago and the other 25yrs ago.Last month she went in to get the 25yr old one redone.She wasn't worried one bit says if it needs doing do it ! But she is wondering why its taking longer to heal this time around,I told her " mom you were 25yrs younger last time"lol

I was having issues in the mid to late 90's. Was only 30 yrs old at time, but my dad had his own business that I've worked in since I was in my early teens, standing on concrete many hours a day. Then we got into construction and landscaping, up until 2000 worked outside. Then I got into small engine/ equipment repair, so again long hours on concrete. Doctor in 1996 told me they can only cut legbone twice in your lifetime, to live with it as long as I can so i'm not in a wheelchair in my 60's I'm now 48, and cannot bend down or pivot, hip and back have been locking up on me.

Saw a highly respected Doctor a few weeks ago who told me my left and right hips have no cartlidge left, and there are bone spurs on my left pretty bad. He said he want's to do the left first, then the right about 6 months after. Talking about an eight week recovery period. Thank goodness for Aleve, or I probably would be on the ground now

Anyone with any experience with this, or pro's in the medical field, feel free to chime in!! JOHN

I have a chrome plate Cobalt (bone-in) hip joint that I had installed in 2004. Been working fine for 10 years but I do need a check up. I have never heard of the only cut twice deal so I would check with another doctor about that one. If you want I can give you the name of my surgeon as he is regarded as one of the top surgeons in Chicano as Rush University. I still have his business card with his information.

Hello All

I had both of mine done in 08 and 09.

The first few days you think you will never walk again, but you do pretty quick.

There is alot of pain and rehab to go through but you get there eventuly.

My worst problems are getting down on the ground and then getting back up again, takes a little effrot either way but when I get up or down everything is OK.

My doc asked when I would quit working, I said probably when they drag me off the floor.

He put the best in me, mine are made by Smith and Nephew (UK), they are black ceramic and wear 98 percent LESS than chromium steel.

I am hoping that this is the ONLY time I will have them replaced, I am now 71 and doing fine with them.

I do take pain meds daily, but mostly for overall body aches and pains in general, only slightly from my hips.

I also have to take Fosomax Plus D once a week to help strengthen my bones and help keep them strong, so far so good, no other problems to note.

Hope this gives some insight about your comming hip replacement.

74, a pilot friend of mine had the same as you're getting ... maybe 10 years ago. He gets around fine with them, tho his back is now messed up from a Mig-21 crash.

Seeing this thread come up reminded me about my hip. I never even think about it anymore because it is just a part of me and works excellent. That's saying something because I was on the wrong end of the recovery curve and at one point I thought I had made the worse decision of my life getting the replacement. Now I'm 100% certain that it was worth it.
