and yes.

The decklid is absolutely installed before the body goes through paint, so those bolts would get paint coverage just like the hinges and underside of the trunk lid itself.

I was a little surprised to see the lock mechanism gets painted since those are usually installed in trim, after paint. Apparently that's not how Pontiac was set up and the mechanism was installed in body shop, prior to paint.

Also note where the trunk lid seal end seam is located; offset to the right!!!! Correct. "Bill"!

In the article it says that this car has the factory placed yellow mark in the the trunk's weather stip channel to tell the line worker where to begin the installation of the weather stip.

I have seen this seam vary in location and not always offset on the right. Plant variations I guess.

I can't read the mag. article nor have it. but you need to consider. This car was not in a bubble. its was as what I can read from pics of article it was a raced car. so given that its not all that AS NEW . Certainly a full detail was done with corrections made from use. Not as good a candidate for originality concerns.

Good luck on the money. But I'm sure the point is to cause reaction, as it has. Next stop B.J. with all the papers in the trunk.

my lock mechanism is not painted from the factory.
it does have overspray on it .
the bolts that hold it in (on the rear) are not painted.

Jerry H, I don't know what you know, but I agree with you 100%!!! The Restored engine bay really detracts. This car looks to be too spruced up to be a survivor. I would love to crawl all over it in person!!

Interesting. That's how I would have expected it.

Today we try to keep paint out of the mechanism so it doesn't get jammed up, especially now that we dip the vehicles in primer.

Apparently, back then, the Pontiac plant folks weren't too concerned about overspray (or full on paint coverage).

Another plant to plant difference.

just an observation from your picture . it appears as if the star washers on the back side of the bolts made impressions in the sheet metal closer to the drivers side of the deck lid ,this would indicate the latch has been shifted to the passenger side of the lid . Is it really the original latch ? just asking .

I see the impressions too. It seems that the latch has been adjusted at one time (possibly during install) . And yes it is the original latch as it does have some overspray on it.
I think Keith may be correct that some things were done differently from plant to plant. for example my firewall tag was taped over prior to spraying the black on the firewall... it seems this was only done at Freemont Cal.

Most of you will remember this 65 that was for sale on ebay a couple years ago. This was a march BF build . He claimed it to be original paint . i think he made a good case it was.

Thank gosh! he posted so many nice pics.

oops
for some reason when i saw that picture and started typing, i was thinking it was a 64 car, with a 65 finger guard installed . lol -edit-
but anyway ...

I agree with you 8LUG , they have killed all the original patina that would have made the car a more valuable contender. And added plenty of amateur fluffing.

Maybe not getting Gold in 2000 sent the owner spiraling into "dress it up" mode.
Something went very wrong between the 91 magazine article and now.

Looks like "generic dealer work" by the radiator cap - so maybe the florida dealer just recently ruined its patina . California appraisal was probably done by telephone and fax machine.

Yep---refurbishing and original old survivor car these days is like refinishing an antique gun or Tiffany lamp....a major no-no. Totally kills the value and integrity. But most folks don't know that.

Isn't that the wrong dipstick tube? I thought the non-A/C cars got the shorter dipstick?

Good point. Is there a difference in length? Some people have mentioned that my dipstick is in the "A/C position." (engine came from a '69 Firebird.) If there are different dipstick lengths, that could explain why I get some strange readings on mine.

Yes, the non-A/C cars got a shorter dipstick, like this one, which is in my non-A/C '66. I know, the engine paint is not the right color, but this is the short dipstick. --psw

Sorry guys but I disagree with the dipstick tube. The one on this ebay GTO looks to be correct for non A/C. The 65 GTO A/C dipstick tube has a totally different tang for mounting. The tube is mounted on the A/C mounting hardware that sets it about the same distance from the head as the non A/C. Later years you saw the dipstick a great distance away from the head.

Yeah I was not totally sure. I had only heard of A/C and non-A/C length and certainly do not know the specifics about various years. That is why I asked the original question about this one.

YES to the above!

Dipstick and tube on that 65 ebay car is "correct"!

Example in photo below shows how the 65 Non-Air Condition stick and tube looks.
