One time he came home from visiting out in the neighborhood and his face was blue - from frosting! It was somebody's birthday cake and we know that because shortly after he got home he started throwing it up - candles & all!

We never got a phone call, but I think ole Max spoiled somebody's birthday that day!

Happy Birthday Max. Boss, get him to the vet and see what that mass is. It could save him a lot of pain and grief, and let him live longer.

I've got a cat that's a little goofy in the head who's 17 years old and still going strong.

Max is 14 today, and there have been multiple times I would have bet he wouldn't have made it.

Last summer he ended up with a melanoma on his chin, it's distended his jaw and moved some teeth but stopped as suddenly as it started and has not progressed passed a certain point. He sees the vet monthly, occasionally getting xrays to monitor the tumors in his body - he's riddled with them.

When I was over in London a few weeks ago I got a late night call that he wouldn't get up and wasn't eating. I called my son & put him on alert, but I was still two days from home. He made it through, was happy to see me when I got home too.

I'm not sure if it's right to be keeping him alive at this point but I know he's still in there even though the light has gone out of his eyes. He'll get a cheeseburger for dinner tonight, and a cupcake or two, maybe even some of my beer. It'll be a good day for him.

Isn't that the way with all dogs? And size doesn't count.

Belated but still..... Happy Birthday Max. You 'ol drunken hound. LOL

When I was in college years ago [1969] we went to a Frat party at Cornell University in Ithica, NY. They had a St. Bernard puppy that was a lush. Alcoholic is more like it as those idiots weren't smart enough to not give him beer. He died at 2 years old because of all the beer.

I could never put him down. he will go on his own when he is ready.

Happy Birthday Max.

This thread really brought a tear to my eye. Max looks like my old boy Harry. He was just on 17 when we had to take him to the vet for the last time.

Pictures are my grandson and Harry when they came up a day or so earlier to say goodbye to him. I never let an animal suffer and I fully believe they can tell you when "it's time".

14 is a good run for any dog. Not many make it longer. Give him lots of love and cheeseburgers!

My old Elkhound "Torvald" made it to 14-3/4.

Clydesdale (3-1/2) and Jackson (11-1/2) say "Happy B-day Max!"

Thanks guys - he is a real good boy! Got his burger last night on top of his regular kibble and of course his cupcake with whipped cream on top - he was pretty happy.

My only worry is that he is in constant pain and miserable. His hind legs at this point are difficult for him to control and at any given time he'll do a split and can't get up. I try to get home every day at lunch to let them out and last week I got here one day and he was trapped in the dinning room - no idea how long - had fallen and couldn't get up. He's already on regular pain medication to make it easier for him but I worry that it's constant. For anyone who has dealt with long term, chronic pain, you know how debilitating both mentally and physically that can be.

Happy Birthday Max. I like the annual MaxInfo Update. The hip failure in big dogs is a tough one, Bossman. My last dog, a huge Husky male got that. (Huskies are high incident of that). When he couldn't get in my Bronco anymore, I knew he was betting bad, cause he loved cruisin' the woods. Give them love as long as you can, Maybe talk to good vet on care advice for that on comfort angle. GO MAX

Happy belated birthday to Max!

Our black lab, Zeus, made it to 13-1/4 years old when we had to have him euthanized. He developed hip dysplasia and was having a hard time, and the vet believed that he was in pretty constant pain based on the way he stood, didn't want to sit or settle, and panted a lot. He would struggle to go up even a couple of stairs, fell a few times, and was starting to lose control of his bowels.

We decided to have him euthanized at home so that he wouldn't have to endure the car ride and the potential trauma or fear of being at the vet's office, but we had to schedule it so we knew for a couple of weeks in advance when his last day would be. In the interim we gave him as much attention as we could, gave him food that we wouldn't normally give him, made his last days as good as they could be. It was nice for him that he could be in his own yard with our son eating treats immediately before going. When the time comes for a dog, I'd recommend doing that if possible.

Zeus was diagnosed with tricuspid valve dysplasia, a heart defect, when he was less than two years old, based on a vet listening to his heart. A specialist said that at least one of his parents had to have had it, and that they really shouldn't have been bred. The vet said that we may see signs of progression or heart failure - him falling behind on walks, that type of thing, and that he could in theory, just drop dead at any point. He also developed a thyroid condition so he was on meds for that. Despite everything, he made it past his 13th birthday.

THANK YOU. You won't believe the amount of inner peace you just gave me. My cat Jack is 15, apparently healthy, overweight a bit, and very lazy. He means more than most people do to me. I dread "the end". You just changed everything. I never thought of that. DUH. THANKS. Oh, here he is playing dead.
