still playing records.

A NEW 2nd hand store opened up & .....wait for it......

the owners have 1000's of collector records they are sitting on. They brought a few boxes in, i picked through...
Scored a bunch of James gang, Wings, Steve Miller , Johhny Cash, Allman Bro, Skinny Leonard, & Robin Trower. Think I spent $30, then $20 for about 20 albums.

They inflate prices, because that's good for the hobby (just like how they do in the collector car world). When a rare record album is on display for $200, everyone thinks their beat up copy they have at home is worth that too. Most $200 record albums (and sports cards) are worth about $10. Condition is everything. With record albums, to get "price guide prices", they have to be virtually unplayed and pristine, with perfect jackets and sleeves, no flaws. Record collectors (and sports card collectors) are very picky.

A sealed copy of a rare record is something else. They can bring double the prices shown in a price guide.

I have a large collection too, lots of original Beatles and Beatles solo material. But I also have a lot of 1950's to 1980's stuff, ranging from rock to jazz.

Just a note on the Jack White "Lazzaretto" album. It's REALLY cool, very innovative what they did. A few of those gimmicks had been done before, like two sets of grooves on the same side that play different songs, but the hologram that pops up is awesome.

On the downside, the album is horrible. It's the same old Jack White, same old "cram 30 words into one line" technique, followed by a screaming guitar solo, and a chord change you can see coming from 12 bars away. But it still beats the heck out of Taylor Swift or Katy Perry.
Good points and I'd agree on the JW album...I actually had a new sealed copy in hand at the 1/2 price store (they sell new vinyl and books too) and I didn't pull the trigger for this "novelty" vinyl IIRC it was pricey $$$ over $30...but I DID point it out to the young cashier who snatched it up to take it home

I want to set up a turn table to play my old records (33 1/3 and 45s).

I am on a learning curve. Can someone recommend a brand name turn table?

I have a Sony DA5200ES AV receiver I want to use.

FYI: Original Discwasher Replacement Fluid Suggestions

Q: "Last year I bought an original Discwasher cleaning brush with an original red bottle of cleaning solution. The bottle was half full, and in combination with the brush worked great. I bought the new RCA solution D4 bottle, and am not happy with the results. Can anyone recommend a solution I can use with my Discwasher brush? Also, are original Discwasher Solution bottles still available? Thank you for your help."

http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable...ic.php?t=25928

A1: "You can make your own solution with a mixture of distilled water and isopropyl(60/40 or 70/30). Records in need of a heavy duty cleaning require a different process than the discwasher, see record cleaning threads.
The fluid with the discwasher system is more for breaking the static cling of dust and paper particles. Do as others and myself do: hold your liquid cleaner in a small spray bottle(eye glass cleaning variety) and just spritz the brush to lightly dampen."

A2: "My nickel's worth. I like to add the recommended amount of Kodak Photo-Flo 200 (so that's 1:200) because it breaks down surface tension, is a non-ionic detergent (helps promote even drying and prevents droplets on the record surface) and a small 8oz. bottle should last half your lifetime! Photo-Flo also reduces static-build-up and dust attraction (very well indeed on film!). Personally, I always thought D-4 fluid was slightly diluted window cleaner! (My nose is a pretty good phase chromatagraph!) I can't say that if it was, that was "BAD", I just never thought it was "ideal" for "non-grungy" LP's. It did do a very good job of cleaning smoker's LP's."

Many thanks, Alvin. I took your information and spent about three hours today researching. Just ordered my Audio-Technica AT-LP120 this evening. Can't wait to start spinning my early 60s LPs I have kept in a box all these years...Carl Smith, Jerry Lee, Julie London, Ike and Tina; Oh, yeah...

The neighbors are gonna love me.

Wow, I rarely see anyone mention Jerry Lee. Usually, the only knowledge people have of him was that awful Dennis Quaid movie where he portrayed Jerry Lee as a cross between Ace Ventura and Jerry Lewis. Not that biopics need to be accurate, but that one, along with the wildly inaccurate "Buddy Holly Story", are two of the most famous.

For those that aren't aware of what Jerry Lee did beyond his huge hits "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin'"....

Punch up YouTube and listen to Jerry Lee Lewis, Live At The Star Club, Hamburg, Germany (1964).

This was several years after his fall from grace (teen bride marriage), and while the general public and record companies shunned him, fans of rock music still loved him. Regarded as one of the greatest live albums of all time. It's amazing how after all these decades, listening to this live performance still stirs the raw emotion of what rock n' roll was all about.

Ironic that I just came upon this thread. Only last week a vinyl collector friend of mine and myself were talking about sound quality and I happened to mention my original copy of Led Zeppelin IV with "Pecko Duck" hand inscribed into the inner area of the record. Apparently they are made from the original master recordings by the illustrious cutting engineer George Peckham. Always thought this record sounded great. Better then my CD by far. Now I know why. My friend has an insane vinyl collection. Many rare Jazz and Blues recordings which have not even made it to digital yet.

I've got a few old LPs stored away. Someday I want to get selected cuts and make a few really good CDs

I also have some comedy LPs. Best are The Smothers Brothers. I have 4 that are autographed by Tom and Dick back in 2000 for my 50th birthday. That was a treat meeting them. Tommy Smothers is freeking nuts but still a great guy, as is Dick. LOL I also have Flip Wilson, George Carlin, and Johnathan Winters. They don't get any funnier than these guys.

Excellent! Hope you enjoy yours as much as we do ours. Especially once you get it set up to your satisfaction...and don't be alarmed if the power or platter on/off doesn't cycle (minor micro switch adjustment) a time or two... This (AT-LP120) is a Chinese knockoff of the original - no longer in production - design of the Technics SL-1200MK2 that was in the $1,000 neighborhood cost.

You might want to pick up a spare cartridge head shell at the Guitar Center, etc. when they run a sale.

I would comb through your local Craigslist - on a quick look through mine I found several that were well priced and worth going to look at - Harmon Kardon, Thorens, Dual etc..

Default OK , one of you audiophiles help me ...

Finally got my turntable (Technics SL 3360 direct drive) hooked up. Had to get a moving magnet preamp, since my Yamaha receiver/amp does not have a "phono" input. Connected it to one of the audio inputs.

Sounds ok, but I'm pretty sure the cartridge/stylus is worn, or possibly a little rough from being tossed around while stored (pic2).

All of my "saved" stuff is old anyway (couple attached below), so I may never get it sounding as good as originally. Bwaa haa haa ... this from a guy who spent his early life around jet engines, so I probably couldn't hear good sounds anyway, but I can always play it LOUD!.

Any recommendations on a mid-priced cartridge?

Most all the classic stuff is on 180 and 200 g vinyl. I couldn't dump vinyl fast enough. Records are a PITA. But it is most definitely making a comeback. Check out this turntable.

Yes, still in business. And I agree, their cleaner and preservative is very good.

Topic reminds me of the "Sound Guard" that I applied to many of my albums back in the '80s and can still hear the difference during playback today Very time consuming and tedious procedure IIRC.

Here's an interesting forum Q & A w many suggested "Do's & Dont's" about handling and treating vinyl albums you may find interesting
