Do you have an old insurance policy showing that you owned the car? That should also work. In Mass, they are just looking for proof of ownership.

I was actually thinking that the fact that there is an active title (2010) was a good thing. If I can get the name of who is on it, maybe I can get it legitimately signed over.

Sounds like it's changed hands two or three times since it left PA and nobody has registered or insured it.

But I'm not putting out money till I know for sure.

Nope, too long ago ... last time it was on the road was probably 1981, still had Tenn plates, I was in NY in the military. Maybe I could show them a picture of my in my high school cap and gown standing next to the car
I guess I could just bring the old, notary stamped title in and let them look at it, but not let them keep it?
Just noticed I have the original application for title and sales tax form from TN too. Records the application for the title and the sales tax I paid when I first registered the car in 1976.

I understand the desire to keep the provenance of the car, but to me, the choice between keeping the vintage title or putting the car on the road would be a no brainer. When I moved to Utah, I had the Arizona title for my GTO from when I bought it from my parents; Utah DMV said they had to keep it, so I had them make me a copy of it. I am more interested in being able to drive it than having original paperwork for it.

Speaking from Canada here. I know that in both Alberta and the Yukon Territory, back in the nineties, for an older car all you needed was a bill of sale, and after the DMV did a search to see if it was listed as stolen, they'd issue a title to you. I did it myself a couple of times in both places I don't know if that has changed since then, so if anybody has any knowledge of any changes to that maybe they could chime in. In B.C., where I am now, if you didn't have a title you needed to either get it from the last registered owner, or you could jump through a lot of hoops and they would eventually issue you a B.C. provincial title, the downside to that is they would remove the factory VIN plate, and install a Provincial tag with their own number on it.

I've registered cars with certified copies of titles and registrations before. If you can get a copy of the TN title certified as true, you might be able to use that instead of the real deal.

Or just get really HQ copies of the TN title to keep for yourself if you have to turn the real one in.

Jeez, not a bad idea.

Call me crazy, but for some reason I just don't want to give up the title to the first Pontiac I ever bought and replace it with a cheezy azz little piece of flimsy green paper that is a new York reggie

Was it ever registered in Georgia or did I miss something? The old VW camper bus we took to Daytona a couple years back did not have a title. I honestly did not think it was for sale until the guy pulled out a bunch of cash and my wife could not say no. We pulled the tag off of it, and filled out a bill of sale on the back of one of the advertisement papers in our goodie bag and made a copy of it at the Walgreens at Bel-Aire. We mailed him the T-22B vin verification we had run on the van. Last year we talked to him and he said he took the bill of sale and that form to the DMV and had a title soon after. I thought all the states recognized what other states did and just did them how they wanted them done.

All states will recognize what another state does as far as having either a title or registration. They all have something that shows ownership, and all other states will take that. But...they will not all follow the same procedure to gain ownership of a vehicle that has nothing. I do have the number of a company in CT that claims they can get you ownership in your state for $350 for any vehicle, which is cheaper than most of the places advertising that online.

If the car is worthwhile, consult a local attorney as to how to procede. He/she may tell you to consult an attorney in PA. Or possibly contact the PA DMV.

Lots of well meaning advice on this thread, but in a nutshell, you need advice from your state (which you have from DMV) and from the state where the car was titled.

Just as an update, I've got a couple things in work with the help of the FL DMV and PennDOT. But everything is by mail, so I probably won't actually know anything for at least two weeks. After that I'll let everyone know how things pan out.

I had a couple of things in the works with PennDOT via mail and it took a week to do it. But I live about 40 miles south of Harrisburg too. Good luck
