As others have said make sure that your rubber fuel hoses from the tank are all in good shape. I remember once having this problem too, on another car. But that one would not run at all with the broken hose.

Quote:
Crank it for 5-10 seconds, then see if you get a pump shot. If not then replace the fuel pump.
I meant that you should check to see if you get an accelerator pump shot by looking into the carb and stroking the throttle. Not sure that loosening the inlet connection is as good a way to check.

Both a cracked fuel hose and a bad pump can cause the same symptom- no gas gets in the carb when cranking.

I've experienced this a few times

For several years I have contended that the old updraft carburetors (used prior to 1930) were much more reliable than the modern downdraft carburetors.

Why??? They were so hard to get to, generally the REAL PROBLEM was diagnosed and repaired before the carburetor was touched

And Cliff, the foam pads actually did work, as least in the mind of some of the "mechanics" (nowhere else).

The fix ended up being a different choke rod and box. I picked one up for a 68'-70' from the parts place. Had to tweak the rod slightly. Works like it should now. Also found a loose distributor cap. (My father takes the blame for that one)
