It's hard to describe, Tom. It just sounds different when compared to a standard Pontiac V8 exhaust tone.

I don't know about that. To me, Merlins and Allisons sound totally different. My old friend Bud could tell the difference between a 252 and a 270 Offy from the exhaust note.

Either they sound like a solid roller garbage truck, or they be pinging at idle.

On the technical note; it's all in the cam, and the tune.

There's been allot written about exhaust sound waves being deflected or reflected. Sound plausible the, more straight, exhaust round port would have a different note on a given exhaust system.
You can identify a modern 5.0 Muskrat by sound long before you see the car regardless of the muffler used.

Nice video and awesome work. I don't think I ever heard a rav but I was surprised as to the sound, thought it would be louder.

Most video recorders have a sound 'limiter' so it won't blow the amp or speaker.
Actually depending on the quality of the equipment, they can't record all the frequencies so the sound is not as accurate as in live sound.

I've recorded my dragster and it sounds like it's idling, while I couldn't hear anyone (or anything else).

Anyway still sounds great.
(and looks great)

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the kind words.

Tom, this is more of a streetable (barely) pump gas engine that will be fuel injected, so not into the horsepower wars. Going into 71 Judge convertible clone show car with air conditioning, but it will be driven. We are tentative on a chassis dyno in the spring.

Mark - I would surely trade your weather instead of what you used to have up here!

Well said John. I've listened to the engine on different computers and phones and they all sound different. There is also a lot more valve train noise on the first start up. I ended up having the 4 rockers I clearanced for the stock valve covers still touching the bulge area.
The last video (there are 3 running video's) of just the idle had that fixed and it was much quieter. As for noise, this was the loudest of all the engines on my stand (except maybe Pete Hortons blown 871 on youtube) but the recorder doesn't pick that up. in fact it muffles it. This was the loudest because of the 2" headers and 3.5" PYPES RACE PRO MUFFLERS. They are straight through without a tail pipe or X, so it was close to open headers, but they definetly reduced the noise well enough not to have my neighbors call the police. This thing was very loud when I opened it up! Video was done on Iphone

Paul just stop by Jeff's garage. Quite the package. Would be great to have a " John Facenda"(local reference) voice narrating your video. LoL
