Your pic of the top screws got me headed in the right direction. Once I saw the cardboard under the bottom screws, I knew I had a touchdown! Now I have to buy some different speakers. The ones I bought are way too deep to fit in the tray!

If I look at the top when folded down there is piles of room between the speakers and the top.

If the replacement speakers are sticking out of the box in back it shouldn't matter, just put a pad or something so the magnet doesn't rattle against the sheet metal.

I see what you are saying. However, the speakers I bought are HEAVY and I don't think the cardboard trays will hold them for very long with just two screws holding them up from the top. For now I am going to install the speakers in the trunk in the wood boxes I already have. I want to get a price to have deeper sheet metal replacements made for the cardboard pans to use with the deeper speakers.
