I think what they're saying here is the clamp down ring on a standard distributor is about the same size as the hole in a SD block. ID and OD of the gasket ends up extremely narrow.

A thin sheet metal ring/washer/gasket (regular distributor ID and SD gasket OD) installed before the adapter sleeve goes on would give more sealing area.
Use two gaskets or glue/epoxy the ring to the distributor.
A thick ring would require cutting that amount off the distributor to keep height close to right.

I think too much and got plenty of time.

Some of the mopar prestolites had a wavy copper gasket they used, but those are also hard to find. Also not sure if they'd be the correct diameter

WOW ! Tribal knowledge is disappearing ! At one time, every Pontiac guy knew a SD 455 had a bigger distributor hole in the block to accommodate the larger dist. gear used with the SD 455 cam, and the SD 455 dist. was a standard size dist., but with a factory installed adaptor sleeve to match up with the larger hole in the SD 455 block, which in turn required a larger ID dist. gasket.

I went to a parts store and found a thermostat gasket with the silicone bead on it that has the right size inner hole and then put it on the distributor and trimmed the outer diameter to the distributor. It worked great.

No, I had went through a bunch of random gaskets that they had laying around from left over engine kits, so I am not sure what it was from? Sorry, I need to pull the distributor and clock the housing, I will see if I can figure out what it came from? I do know the ID was the same as the distributor sleeve.

I pulled my distributor last weekend and checked out the gasket, I couldn't find the exact gasket with the silicone bead on it but did find that a Napa # thm-1064-at thermostats gasket matches up with what I used, the ID is perfect fit for the SD distributor sleeve and then you can trim the OD to your distributor housing or I trimmed mine to the the outer machined surface on the block, that gasket is from a 2.0 and 2.3 Ford 4cyl motor from the late 80's. I hope that helps you out?.
