Some of the old early 60s replacement, threaded studs I have seen do not have a hex. You just tighten them ,channel locks, vise grips etc

I bought these studs years ago on Ebay from these people.

They are tapped 1/2-13 in the stud bosses. I used two 7/16 lug nuts and jam nutted them together before tightening then down.

Okay, well then I feel better about the whole deal. 45foot-Lbs with jambnuts sounds do-able. You feel better too right?

I just wonder what set of forces is prividing the 45ft-Lbs?

I went German Torque Specs (Goot-N-Tight) with a 18" breaker bar so they are probably closer to 60 ft-lbs.

I tried that once on a Chevy, without proper tools or milling, and they ended up all over the place after I jammed them down. I removed them, coated the threads with slow curing JB weld without jamming them down, then before it could set up I installed all the rockers and tightened them up until all the valve springs were compressed. The result was positive with good roller contact on the valve stems, but would never do it again. The Pontiac heads that have the stamped pushrod guide plates should already be milled flat. So without a drill guide, it would be really hard to get them straight. Using the shouldered studs might straighten them up to some degree just make sure you have clearance between the hex and bottom of the rocker arm. And on a street car I don't see any advantage to using the poly locks. It also seems the tops of the studs that I have dealt with are not flat enough to get a good contact on the set screw. I used poly locks on the one I did, but used the jam method to tighten the set screw as the allen wrench did not seem sufficient. So I tightened the set screw, then held the allen wrench while screwing the nut counter clockwise. Then when you get an idea how much you turned it back, compensate on lash. IF you are using a ball type rocker trunion the rocker will pitch enough to compensate for the off center if it's not too radical, but if it's a full roller rocker, being centered is more of an issue. You will have to make that call. I once put full roller rockers on stock pressed in studs, and they were too crooked causing the poly locks to grind on the rocker trunions so I had to go back to ball trunions. So this means that the ball trunions will safely compensate for some off-center on a street car.

In the end, these two were the worst. I was miraculously able to find a couple of new Melling rocker arms locally. I wanted a new wear pattern on these two so I can monitor them. Luckily, these Melling arms are just a touch wider down there. I tweaked the guide plates a bit and it worked well on #3 but #2 is still off. I bent it to the point the pushrod was starting to rub on the head so I backed it off a bit. I inserted those two polylocks on very clean/dry studs with a little blue Loctite. I ran the motor for a few minutes today but my wife was having a school conference (oops) as she is a teacher so I'll finish breaking the cam in tomorrow. I have 16 minutes of run time on this overhaul and new cam.

The only other thought I could come up with was to try and find a Ford Windsor 1.5 offset rocker arm if this doesn't work.
