So that is two lobes checked out & adjusted via key slots if necessary. What about the other 14 lobes?

That's an excellent question! You have to have a certain level of trust in the person/company that is grinding your camshafts for you. For mild builds without razor thin tolerances, if #1 comes in where it belongs, you are "assuming" the other 14 lobes are correct and they almost always seem to be. Joe Mondello, one of my mentors, always checked the 4 corners of the block on every build for cam phasing, at a minimum. For close tolerance race engines, Pro Stock, Indy car, he would check every lobe. Time consuming and somebody has to pay for that time. Personally, I have never found any "rouge" camshaft lobes on a cam that had a correct #1 pair.

Just had an expensive adjustable Cloyes timing gear set that the markings were wrong. By the marks, it had to be installed 8 degrees retarded to advance the cam 4 degrees.

Not to mention the instructions had bad information on how many degrees each link on the chain represented. Needless to say it took way too long to get it all figured out and the cam installed correctly. If someone were to install it without checking it they would have an engine that was a complete dog below 4000 rpm.

Some of those 9 keyway crank sprockets can be very confusing and yes I have installed them wrong more than once! They have an inner and outer set of numbers and they DO NOT align by design. The inner ring of numbers denotes the keyway your supposed to use. The outer ring of numbers denotes the actual tooth your supposed to line up with the cam sprocket. Not saying this is the mistake you made but it is very confusing. I use a paint pen to mark the two items I am shooting for. Keyway and crank tooth. Certainly possible something was made wrong as well.

I have checked them, but never had to run anything other than straight up. Dot to dot. They all were either pretty much right on or close enough to not make a big difference.
I like it the best when they come in at 1 deg advanced like my last engine. Chain stretches as little and its still where it should be.

You can check them if you want. We usually double check the number six since it's tdc is already indicated.
