The year was 1973. I had a '67 Lemans Sprint, and was stationed at Fort Huachuca,
Az. for AIT. In early January, after the holidays, my wife and I loaded up the
car to drive to Az. from Illinois.
We got to the post and established our first home in
a trailer park near the post north gate.
On weekends we traveled around southern Az. visiting Tombstone and
other sights in the nice Az. mild weather, a very enjoyable time.

Once I was discharged, I had some back pay in my pocket, no current job, so we
traveled west to San Diego to see the sights and visit my sister. We went up to
Yosemite right after they had 8 feet of new snow and did some tubing down the
hills. The fresh deep snow was spectacular. Back to San Diego and the Zoo, Sea
World, the Safari, Mission Bay, Coronado Island.
We then managed to go to Disneyland, of course, never been there
either.
On the way back to the midwest, we visited the Grand Canyon, first time at the
Canyon.

It probably doesn't seem like a very memorable time to the casual reader, but
it's a fond memory for the two of us, relative newlyweds, kind of starting
life together.

Had no issues with the car at all, except for some noticeable high altitude
richness around the Huachuca mountains around 8k feet. The post is also
approx. 1 mile above sea level.

Kept the car till '83, repainted it in Imron Slate Gray, parchment interior,
and added a 5 speed.

It was destroyed when a guy slid across the centerline in a curve and I t-boned
him. Wish I still had the cammer!

Dad would do that.

He drove our '63 SD Catalina, aluminum front end car from Detroit to visit family in SE Missouri.

Swapped the gear set and made passes at George Ray's drag strip and then drove it home.

Hard for me to pick just one memory.

I don't remember it myself but I know when my sister was born Dad and I went down to Royal and picked up the GTO instead of going to see Mom and Jenny in the hospital. That was September 1964.

I remember flat towing the GTO to the track and pretending "Casper the Friendly Ghost" was driving.

Also taking the '65 to A&W for root beer and hot dogs. I can say with authority that the little cup holder indent in the glovebox has been used as intended.

Going to the drag strip and losing the siren to my Buddy L tow truck in the dirt. Going back the next weekend and finding it in the dirt (since we parked in the same spot).

I remember taking our '68 to Florida. At the time any of the cars built for hot climates were built with the steel front bumper, so folks down there were really excited to see an endura front bumper. We had to have that bumper painted about 4 times within the first year of ownership because the paint didn't stick.

When our '68 GTO was new we took it to a small children's farm in the Flint area, which was complete with a small petting zoo. When it was time to go, as we approached the parking lot we could see it looked like there was a small animal, a goat possibly, was on the hood of one of the cars. We thought that was hilariously funny, until we got closer and realized it was a goat on the hood of our new GTO. Dad did not find that hilariously funny (but it is kind of cute now: a "goat on the hood of a goat"!).

I was probably 55 years old before I realized you could touch the painted surface of a car with your bare hand and not have something terrible happen.

Okay - now I have a favorite.

I remember that Tri City dragway would have special events were you could take passengers for a pass.

Dad gave me a full on ride, slicks and open headers, probably a 12.20 or 12.40 pass. I must have been 7 or 8 years old.

I remember the launch, and my stomach leaving my body "uuuugggghhh", then the second gear pull "uuuugghhhh" (that's actual audio) through the rest of the quarter.

That set the hook in me. I've been racing 48 years this year.

Well my Trans Am saved my life one day going to work. I had just gotten the TA about 5-6 months ago and started to drive it to work as my daily, TA was a work in progress. I was at a four-way traffic light and had the red light. I was heading north bound and just got the green arrow to turn left onto a busy 4 lane US 34. Just as I am starting to move forward, I see out of the corner of my eye a car heading for me, this idiot driver was trying to run the red light really really late on that red. I stomp on the gas and luckily car just boogies but still thought that person was going to hit me. I can see in my drivers mirror that lady flash past my rear bumper. She made a hard right to avoid hitting me. I still had to turn left onto 34 and car slightly slid sideways but made the turn and I slowed down to pull over. I could see the woman on the opposite side of the road had gotten out of her car and was bent over with head on the trunk of her car. I was so mad and wanted to flip around and yell at her but just got back in TA and left.

2 AM coming home from the bay area football game. Nobody on the road. Wind it up to 125 mph cruise. See headlights a couple miles appear behind me. Held my speed. Took a little while but a full size crown vic CHP cruiser comes up beside me at 125, turns on his bull horn and says "Trans Am slow down". lol And off he went!

Lots of memories when you own a car for over 50 years now but I would have to say our wedding/honeymoon still stands out. Married in August of "77. The procession consisted of two '75 T/A's and two '75 Camaro RS's. Can't imagine how we shoehorned the wedding party into the back seats of those cars but we did Left that night for a cross country honeymoon that left from our home in Northeast Pa to the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Yellowsone, Grand Tetons, Zion, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Pikes Peak, the Air Force Acadamy, Wolf Creek Pass-cuz we just had to experience for ourselves what C W McCall's song described lol, Denver, across I 70 with a must see stop in Speedway Ind to check out the Indy track and museum before finally heading home. We picked up 6 cases of Coors in Colorado Springs cuz ,again, had to honor the just released Smokey and the Bandit movie. The looks we got from the toll booth attendants on the Ohio Pike when they spied the 6 cases stacked in the back seat were priceless by the way. The T/A worked flawless the entire trip although travelling across the western desert in a non a/c car in August is not something I care to experience again. The plan, God willing, is to replicate our trip next year for our 50th aniiverary. Same car, same girl. I think that would be pretty cool and another notable memory
