Looking back over some notes to ask on, I found this. Your car had the automatic transmission downshift switch unhooked. I am unsure if "Rick" did this ? I ask because a 73 formy I was working on had same situation and lots of Dust, had never been plugged in. I was thinking fuel economy, or emissions, BUT.. The car had the factory slapstick shifter. I do NOT see them show up on PHS, but this car had one, does yours have one Steve? I Imagine more "manual" up and down shifting would replace that switch with a slapstick shifter.
Just a thought......and besides MOPAR guys Love Slapsticks!!

I asked Rick and he said he never unhooked it and no one was ever under there to work on anything. And yes, it does have the slapstick shifter.

Hi Steve,

I have been following your work since your first TA. LOVE IT!! So, I got my latest issue of the HMM and it has the SDTA on the cover. From reading your post's, I am wondering if the front valance(I think that is the correct term) is correct on this car? Here is the car and the link. I appreciate your advice and wisdom on this!

Take care,
David

I haven't really done anything to the SD since I got back from MCACN. I've been working on the truck and getting that all set. Truck is all done now and running nicely.

Back to the Firebird. I need to get rid of four worm-style, fuel hose clamps that were put on the lines to the fuel pump, by the second owner. I need two original red and two green spring-style hose clamps. Anybody have any spares in their tool box?

Just checked my hardware box. I have one red one. Kinda small. Looks to be about 7/16" diameter. Yours if you need it.

Yup I could use it, that's the smaller of the two sizes I need.

used to pick up all these I could find in the wrecking yards, kind of hit and miss. as I remember, most auto camero's had them. as far as firebirds, 70-74 Trans Am, approx. same for Formulas had them, base and Espirit not sure, most I saw didn't. past 74 the only ones I have seen were the W72 cars starting in 1977(200 @ 220 HP), 79 TATA cars, Turbo, and Turbo pace cars. so the performance cars from the later years.

bought a 74 TA off of a guy years ago. during the test drive I used the slap during a shift. the guy had owned the car for years and didn't know it would do that.

I didnt know the slap stick ability existed until I bought this car. My Gramma's 75 Esprit doesn't have it. (Turbo 350 equipped).

Steve, PM an address and I'll mail the little red clamp to you.

I have two slightly larger ones as well that may have been green once, but are rusty now. If you want to "restore" those let me know and I'll throw them in the envelope.

Cheap enough, all kinds of purdy colors, and a nice selection . . .

You know me, I'd rather have original rather than repro. The modern clamps have rounded edges on the tabs whereas the originals have sharp, squared off tabs, the better to slice your wrists on when working around them. :-p

Yes, that is the correct looking valance. I didn't get close enough to that car at MCACN to see if it was an original or a modern repro version.

Steve-

Ashamed to say, but I just read your post this morning. Congratulations!! I have been working on the 66 Goat lately and have not been to the 70-73 site in quite a while. Just came on yesterday to find out how to remove the rocker trim, and saw you had purchased a SD Formula. VERY NICE!! Makes me want to pick back up on the 72.
