The sheet from 1989 of Fred S. showing 10 Auto's and 7 Manuals is what has me asking all this. As in - is this list really right and Fred was wrong - did Fred make a small error when jotting in the tranny numbers ? Or does this list have room for improvement in light of Freds transmission breakdown ?

Just trying to get clear here.

When you have a car like a 1971 GTO Judge convertible, it's quite silly to say it's 1 of 1. That actually detracts from the car in my opinion.

How else would you quantify such a rare car then? If you say: "There was not another one built with this color and options combo." - isn't that basically saying the same thing?

Agree with Diego that the "1-of -xx" is extremely tired and over-used. A person can make that statement about many less rare cars if one just "drills down" through the options and colors far enough.

I suppose it's what the less informed rookies want to hear . . .

While it is an overused word that amounts to little more than puffery, a car with actual 1-of-17 rarity should be able to stand on its own without being dragged down that road.

No question at all that some puffery is definitely involved. It has to do with bragging rights and egos. We seem to be fascinated by the production numbers in this hobby, especially those that elevate a particular car into a range of rarity well above the rank and file base models. It is the same in other hobbies - for example: the book and comics hobbies - look at the difference in the value of a First Edition Superman comic book and a plain old everyday issue of Superman. The puffery is directly proportional to the rarity of an item and its perceived value.

Take this post for example - it is 1 of only 2 posts in this thread with the word Puffery in it...now that's rare indeed!

I think claiming "1 of 1" is akin to slapping red paint on a car and trying to sell it to a sucker. That's what the bottom feeders do in this hobby, and there's no car less deserving of that fate than a '71 Judge ragtop.

Like it or not, the "1 of something" data has increased the sale values of many "ordinary cars". Mopars are the best example of this. We can all argue for the rest of our lives whether that's good or bad for the hobby. Personally, once you get beyond model/engine/trans I start to lose interest in the "1 of ?" game. I might add exterior color to that, maybe.
