Apparently you could have one in your order, but Pontiac didn't show it on the invoice!

clegg1, mine is from ASC too.
Where did you find that brochure on the sunroof? I'd like to have one to include in the information for my SD.

I sure will, but I have been looking for years and I don't think I have to tell you that there just isn't any info out there about it.
Great design and no leaking issues after all this time... Does yours have the plastic ASC logo covering the opening in the headliner where the emergency crank is as well? |

Larry, I have that brochure. Interestingly, it makes no mention of it being an option available on an F-Body. It does list the Grand Prix, Grand Am 2-door, Luxury LeMans 2door, LeMans Sports Coupe and LeMans 2-door. It also say's it's available in manual or electric.

Last i knew, asc was still in business. i needed information about the mclaren mustangs they were involved with and were able to provide information plus former company employee contacts for interviews. might be worth a call to see if they still have someone there who was involved with them.

Larry, I have that 1973 Options & Accessories brochure. It contains a mix of accessories for all 1973 models (Grand Prix, Grand Am, LeMans, Firebird, etc...). If you are interested in this brochure send me your postal address and I will mail it to you, no charge.
An interesting observation about the sunroof, although other models are listed for the sunroof in this brochure it does "not" say "except firebird" like most of the other options are specific to say. For example, the cruise control says "Available on all models with V-8 and Turbo Hydra-matic except Firebirds and Venturas". This may not mean anything except it would have likely raised the question back in 1973 and some people got it ordered on their firebirds.

wow....this is excellent.
In the 8 yrs I've had my '73 and the posts I've made concerning the roof, this is the first time there's been this much discussion devoted to the sunroof. Thanks for all the replies. This information goes along way in verification that the factory did offer the "option" through an exclusive 3rd party vendor and not some hack-job by a custom van place. Clegg1....the hole for the manual crank has a "plug" that is covered with factory headliner material. My electric roof works fine but there is no crank to be found in the car. I was also fortunate to obtain a replacement rocker switch and the felt weatherstrip just in case it was needed later on. It came from a retired ASC employee who aquired all the "obsolete" parts after he left. He was also told me that RARELY was a sunroof installed on firebirds, and the unit in my SD is the only one he recalls ever being done. ASC also did the performance modifications for the Buick GNX. Is it typical for the T/A invoice not to show what transmission the car has?
Mine shows the 13 options on the car, but no transmission. It is a 1973, but I have seen a 1970 T/A that is the same way. Could this have anything to do with both being California cars? |

That plug that you mention with the factory headliner material probably is the original ASC plastic plug like mine, just covered up... it has the ASC logo on it. Why not try and remove it and see... You could always just glue the material back on if not. I'll take a pic and post it, if you'd like to see it. It gives me the chance to prove that it is for real when someone looks at the car. You should see the reaction of people who see it... first thing they do is shake thier head as if to say "That's just not right". |

Clegg1, The lack of trans info on the invoice is not an omission. Rather it is because on TAs the choice between 4spd and auto was "no cost" and as such there was no charge to the dealer, so no mention on the invoice. The build sheet and window sticker would definitely spell out which trans the car was built with.

FWIW......When I found my car, it was advertised as an SD455 with sunroof. This was in '99 and when I talked to the guy he told me that nobody would look at the car because it had a sunroof. I'm sure others, including myself felt the sunroof ruined the car but I was wanting an SD pretty bad.
I drove from Houston to Dallas with a trailer in tow just in case. When I arrived to look at the car the seller demonstrated the operation of the roof and I didn't hesitate at purchasing the car once I saw the quality of the installation.

I have that same top on my 1974 Trans Am.
I have even seen a few other 1974s with them too. Strange though, all three are white Trans Ams, with the regular 455 engine. Two (mine, and another) were SoCal cars, and one is in Leigh's Trans Am Club down under. Like you, I have no literature either. George

about that body side molding, was there a factory option code for it, or part of a package, or dealer installed? in addition to the trim on my car that shows on the invoice, it appeared to have had it installed at some point in its life based on what i found under the 3 paint jobs and accompanying bodywork.
