![]() Also in 1970 but at the end of the summer at the US Nationals at Indy. For the Top Fuel final it was Don Prudhomme against Jim Nicoll. The cars were neck and neck going down the track when the clutch in Jim Nicolls car exploded at over 225mph cutting the car in half! The driver less car slid past Don Prudhomme and put him into shock. Jim was unhurt. His ET was 6.45 Here is exciting video of this wild explosion at speed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSAuf...eature=related Here are some pics in sequence... ![]() ![]() In this picture, note the arrows. these are 2 clutch discs flying out of the car at 225mph! You can also see the car is already cut in half and ready to separate. ![]() ![]()

Okay, it's not a "photo"- but it struck me as a cool glimpse back to a time when this racer was not yet known as Big Daddy (from the Apr '57 issue of Hot Rod Magazine).

I believe that was true of his famous twin-engine/twin-slicks dragster also.

Thanks for the link KenK...I had a quick look and this one got my attention.
The car doesn't do alot for me, but the billboard in the background appears to be for Jim Wangers Chevrolet and his Milwaukee Classic Monte Carlo (note the Royal Bobcat style emblem on top). |

My Signet GTO and my brother's Plum Mist 4 speed. The street we grew up on had about 30 homes and more GTO's than any other in the neighborhood. At one end was a green 68 automatic GTO, next door to him was a gold 66 Tempest 326 4 speed, maybe an H/O? Directly across the street was blue 66 428 automatic GTO, at the other end was a red 66 421 4 speed GTO. Also in my yard was a white 65 GTO.
For months, the older kid with the red 66 GTO kept after my younger brother to race. He was running a fresh 421 with a radical cam and headers, and it sounded very intimidating. Late one night all 3 of us ended up at the same traffic light. I was behind my brother in the right lane, and the 66 was in the left lane. As soon as the light changed, it was on! First and second gear was side by side. He was still trying to catch my brother when I passed him. The poor kid lost twice in the same run. ![]() Riding behind the losing 66 were the Allen brothers in a Saturn Yellow 70 GSX. They went to the same high school as the rest of us, and they told everyone how badly we beat the 66. |

The 1st pic was taken in about 1978 in Kennewick WA..... It was my dads '64 GTO. The car was sold shortly after the pic was taken. He bought it in '76 for $750. The 2nd pic was taken in about '80 or '81 in Spokane WA... It was my dads '57 Chieftan.... I think he only paid $750 for the '57 too.

Here is me standing in front of my parents almost new '75 Vega Estate wagon. The pic was taken in '75 or '76 in Montana or North Dakota.

Vega Estate Wagon? That's like a Pinto Luxus Brougham, or Yugo Daytona Special Edition.
![]() Seriously, my brother had a little 73 Vega GT back in the late 70's, cool little car. Orange with a white stripe, 4-speed, and those cool little blacked out rally wheels. When it died, he sold it for $50 to a friend, who had a pit in his backyard. He put the Vega in the pit, opened the hatch, and used it as a doghouse.

It was actually a Vega "GT" Estate. It is the only GT Estate that I have ever seen. The car was traded in on a new '76 Chevy Scottsdale 3/4 ton 4x4 in Minot ND.
