I like that scoop over the carbs,I just wish I had thought of it,it looks much nicer than my square box.

I made the front inlet plates that will get welded in, and the holes for the 3 inch inlet piping that will get welded in too.
![]() (Kind of looks like Wallee, LOL). The inlet pipes will have to be the last thing I weld in, in case something changes during the final fitting of everything. Would be a pain in the pattoot to undo. I also cut out the scoop bottom plate but I can't do the final carb hole openings until I get the Wenzler cast top and I locate the carbs. ![]() That will determine where the scoop sets in relation to the firewall cutout. Slow but showing progress. Mark L

Mark, I like it but I dont think you'd hurt a thing if you used bigger pipe. Think its one of those things where trying multiple sizes might make it look better ...or worse... Me, I'd try several sizes before settling on just one.
Maybe add an a/w intercooler core under that scoop? You're giving me new ideas here Mark. |

My turbo cold side is 2.5 OD and the intercoolers are both 3 inch in and out. So after the turbo everything will go to 3 inch. With twins 3 inch will be plenty. I'd love to bell the 3 inch into 5 going into the scoop but it would cause the piping to stick out way to far before turning down for the intercoolers. Plus 4 and 5 inch aluminum piping gets mucho expensive. Plus I'm playing off of the look of the Malco Gasser Mustang that ran twin turbos up into stacked fuel injection. That would be something I might do a long time down the road. Find Hilborn type injection manifolds, convert them to elec. fuel injection, and run the turbo/intercooler piping to the top of the tall stacks. Mark L

LOL Paul. Any word on the motor yet? Did you see that I'm going with a manual (old Dearborn) 3 speed. Any thoughts on the cam and overall motor combination with the manual. I know it would be better with an auto but, it's going to be more fun with the 3 speed. Good seeing you post on the thread. Mark L

Yea, I'm concerned with that too. I have in-laws coming so I set up all of the turbo equipment for mockup today. The pic shows approx locations of the turbos, the intercoolers, the return tank for the intercooler water between the coolers (the pump is located under the tank), and the intercooler heat exchanger across the front. And the scoop with the inlet pipe showing where it will go.

Hey guys. Been laying low because of heat. At least I'm not alone with that anymore. The whole country is burning up. But I've been doing a few minutes here and few there so I did get one thing accomplished. I finally tackled and mostly completed my entire steering system.
![]() I finally tore the steering column apart and made it into a floor column by eliminating the shift handle and the cast in bump on the collar. Filled and filed/sanded the hole shut and painted it black. I bought an old style rubber rimed steering wheel from a guy that got it on a '64 Goat so it went on with a few mods but now it works fine. I also removed the rag flange on the end and replaced it with a steering 36-3/4 universal joint. The old column bearing at the motor end was shot so I took it out. A good friend mentioned that the front wheel bearings were 3/4 inch and the outer race fits inside the steering column outer shell so I replaced the original bearing with one of the old front wheel bearings. ![]() If you look back at the column support I found out the Pontiac cast rod big end is almost the same diameter as the steering column so I'm going to cut up the original support that I made and make the rod a bolt on to the support. In the pic the rod is not bolted closed all the way. But it will once I get it into it's final resting placed. Then I located the steering box, cut out a steel mount from 1/4 inch steel, located the holes, welded it to the frame and bolted on the box. I bought 5/8th rod ends a while ago so all I had to do was buy the rods from Speedway. The tie rod came the right length but the cross steer rod was a length that they did not have as standard. Instead of buying a custom length rod at more than double the price, I bought one rod the longest that they make them, cut it for length and retapped it. I bought the extra long rod because the price was the same for a shorter one and now I have a 17 inch piece of rod that I can use somewhere else if I need it. Long story short (yeah right). I got all the rods the right length, bolted them all on plus the universals for the steering column end and the steering box, and set the steering shaft in there loose. Did a preliminary alignment on the right front tire and set the cross steer rod to length and bolted that all solid. Using clamps I made the right front tire so it could not move. Put on the tie rod and did a preliminary alignment to the left front tire. Then adjusted the steering box in exact center, adjusted the steering column/wheel to dead center and welded the steering shaft into the universals. Badda bing badda boom. I have a working steering system. Oh, and yes, it even steers in the right direction, LOL. ![]() ![]() The nice thing is. I used the original tie rod arms and placement so the Ackerman stays factory. And the cross steer rod is almost level. Not sure what the next target is but there's lots of stuff to do. Mark L

I hear you on the heat... 2 weekends ago it was 110-112 here...fortunately the humidity dropped to 18-20% range those days... but when it "cooled" to 101-105 range the humidity started to soar. Miserable humidity...great lakes style...not normal for here... felt more like Florida in late July...but it wouldnt rain... I havent had to mow for over a month now... finally getting rain and cool temps... too late for the farmers though... even trees are scorched...leaves have gone brown... Your car has me leanin real hard to do something with my 53 Stude...Hotrod/Ratrod/Racecar road and race worthy. Pontiac power of course... Function over beauty. primer and a few dents might stay. Strong safe fast... lots of "attitude" bit of a rake but not slammed on the ground or jacked too high.... probably shorten wheel base. My 2dr hdtp is 120" a 2dr post coupe is 116"... I think 114-115 or so with the right tire diameter will make it just right. Front wheels already quite forward. I considered a "Bonneville streamliner" look...its easy.... but not me. Keep at it Mark! |

Finally installed my 389 connecting rod steering column drop. I think I found a local chromer so I thought of trying them and have the rod chromed. Once I build a dash, the support behind it will be hidden. I'm going to take out all of the dash except the top cover and extension. I left the piston pin sticking out. I would love to figure out how to mount my tach off of it and install a shift light inside the pin.
In mounting the rod I also used other rod bolts to secure it to the mounting stub. You can see the football heads on the bolts. ![]() ![]() After I get the old dash out of the way I'm going to reinforce the drop with a couple of side shafts. Mark L

Very nice Mark. All of it. Your rod idea is really very cool Ya know....you could come off the steering column with multiple rods like that from 9 o'clock, 10, 11, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and even 4 pm positions to hold all your gauges!

That is a new safety feature Jack-- you got to think outside the box with this "seat of the pants" type of design............ next thing you know Mark will make a pushrod turn signal indicator ;>).............yeah buddy!!!!!!!!!

Jack--I wouldn't do that, this is a trusty old cast rod from the '63 389. I would much rather have it explode into a thousand pieces rather than bend while I'm in a corner---UH-- wait a minute, LOL. Lets see. I already a have a turn signal rod-----HMMMM. Aron I like that thought except for all the rods hanging off the column. Now if I could go to aluminum rods---yeah Babby!!!! I am actually thinking of putting out a wanted ad for a Pontiac spec aluminum rod if anyone has any an old left over unusable rod for the steering column drop. Would look nice all polished up instead of that old cast unit. And the lighter weight would make my car---FASTER---too. 8^) Mark L
