It was sarcasm. Gto George seems to think there is more crashes on the street or at no prep. When cars push the limits there will be crashes no matter what or where you are.

True... my wife's only crash ever was on a prepped track...

Hopefully all of you guys with 600 to 1,000 HP street cars will take heed and install the roll cage and the other safety equipment that you all know you've been needing but haven't pulled the trigger on just yet.

Otherwise things might not turn out as good for you as they did for Shane and Justin.

Be safe, spend what it takes to be safe, your family will thank you for it.

Having recently purchased a bracket car for my kid to drive next year in the street class puts a new perspective on safety for me. It's a fun sport, but it can be dangerous if you crash. Guys like the street outlaws, 10.5 class racers and Pro-Mods among other classes are on the raged edge of loosing control every pass. I think safety in drag racing has a pretty good record, but you never know when something bad will happen. I agree with b-man...Be safe, spend what it takes to be safe, your family will thank you for it!

When did Shane and Bob crash? I've been watching the show, but never saw them crash. Saw him get squirrelly, but never saw a crash.

X2

I almost died at a prepped track once. I was watching bracket "racing" and almost died of boredom...

It is a hard decision. I do not have a race track near me. 3.5 hrs no traffic one way. 90 % of the time I am cruising around, once in a while I will go to a race track or screw around on the street. I take my car to my kids soccer practice, the grocery store on the weekends, you get the point. A cage would make the car not fun.
A new vette and Hellcat do not have a roll bar either, maybe the air bags make up for it. A cage would add weight too. Those guys on street outlaws are making way more than 1000 h.p. also.

That won't happen at a dirt track, There's a reason they outnumber dragstrips about 10 to 1........

Last week the Street Outlaws were at a dirt track, they must have been bored too.

I was at a dirt track last night actually. I love heads up racing at the drag strip and I love dirt track racing. Seeing a 4 door Cavalier "win" a drag racing event because the driver can cut a great light and their crapbox runs consistently is not racing.

No prep and street drag racing has brought more attention to drag racing than it's had in many years.

My wife and I caught 5 out of 8 races this week following the All Star Sprint Speedweek around Ohio. Last night we were at Eldora, and 58 YO Jac Haudenschild won the 30 lap A Main.

Kyle Larson was there for 6 of the 8 races and he won 2 of them was in the top 5 for the other 4, first time I've seen him run on dirt and he is impressive.

No snoozing during those races....................

Actually it is.

You are the one NOT racing?

There is a big difference between racers and spectators.
Drag racing is probably the only motorsport that anyone can do.
(hard to do dirt racing on the paved roads?)

Because one doesn't like watching it, maybe they should try participating?

According to the definition it isn't.

RACE
/rās/
noun

1.
a competition between runners, horses, vehicles, boats, etc., to see which is the fastest in covering a set course.

Wonder why this doesn't mention throttle stops and breakouts?

I love racing. I do race. I've raced go karts, RC cars, dirt track cars, and drag raced. (not to mention forkilfts at work, wheelbarrows, pallet jacksm bicycles, motorcycles, skateboards, and lots of other stupid stuff). When I go to test n tune night with my friends or finding guys to grudge race - that is racing. My low 11 second Camaro is slow compared to a lot of cars, but I race it against other slow cars to see who's fastest. I'm not discounting the skill of bracket guys, but IT IS NOT RACING. I'm sorry but it's not. It is a not a competition of speed. Two 17 second cars actually competing to see who faster is a race, even though they are terribly slow.

It is true that I have never "competed" in a race where I've lost for going too fast...

The limits are reached on un-prepped surfaces a lot sooner. Accidents can happen anywhere. But, fewer accidents on well-prepped surfaces. Because spectators like accidents (especially watching TV where it doesn't seem real), they use un-prepped surfaces so there are more accidents. IMO, of course. If the track doesn't seem up to holding my car, I quit for the day, because I'm paying my own way and I have to live with the results.

That's what you get for being a spectator...If you think bracket racing is boring, you have not participated...winning a bracket race is one of the hardest things I have ever done. If it was easy, everyone would win. Every round of a bracket race is win or go home, against others that are trying to do the same thing. Try it once and tell me how boring it is, that is if you can go rounds.

I have no desire to short shift, use a throttle stop, or let out on the big end to run consistent.

I did enter a 7.0 index race several years ago and went a few rounds. My car runs right at 7.0 on a good run, so I figured I'd give it a go. I ended up getting eliminated by a raggedy back halved, big tired, fiberglass frontend Nova that ran 7.02 (I went 7.08). I'm sure he must have been so proud to beat a car I drove to the track with sticker head-lighted race car.

Likewise, I "beat" a Mustang in the 2nd round because he broke-out and went 6.98. Boy I tell ya, I still haven't stopped bragging about "beating" a car that had me by about a car length.

Bottom line - it isn't for me, and a whole lot of other people. There's a reason why S/O, Radial vs World, 10.5 class races, Pro-Mods, etc. are so popular now. They bring the big crowds because it is exciting to do and watch.

Bracket racing is what keeps the tracks open though, and it's not going anywhere. I just don't have to like it.
