The speedo adaptor was an external gear reducer that screwed in between the speedo cable and the transmission. It was only used on turbo hydramatic transmissions when a 3.90 or 4.33 axle was selected. This was because the th400 didn’t have the right combination of drive and driven speedometer gears for those ratios. The alternative was to have a different speedo drive gear on the output shaft. This would have required a different transmission application. It was cheaper to just have an external screw on device that corrected the cable speed, especially for the very low volume of cars needing it. The manual transmissions used different gears and didn’t have that ratio limitation.

To think that that 1946 is less than 20 years separated from the muscle car era. It’s amazing how much cars changed in a decade back then.

The speedo adapter gizmo was required with Automatic if you had 3.90 gear or 4.33 gear.
I guess the needed amount of teeth for the plastic speedo gear wouldn't mesh with the pinion type drive gear on the transmission output shaft.
Instead of retooling special output shafts for the cause , they used a gear reduction adapter.
And charged extra for it ...

Consider that early post-war cars were essentially re-trimmed pre-war cars. It wasn't until the early '50's that we saw the demise of running boards, V configurations vs straight 8's, and the like.

That '46 is beautiful, and indeed 3 on the tree (automatic was introduced in '48; prior post-war cars were all 3 on the tree, AFAIK).

The price is surely reasonable, and the car is actually within driving distance for me here on the Island (20-30 minutes east of me). If I could squeeze the time, I'd love to go out and have a look-see, even though sedans are not really my thing. It's just such a wonderful piece of history, though...

I was hoping for that '47 Streamliner woodie, and almost seriously considered the BIN on it, but my place right now is like 5 pounds of bologna in a 2-pound bag (and my '63 is not getting evicted from her spot in the garage to make room - LOL). Still, I think it would have done better at Barrett-Jackson than on eBay (different crowd), so if I were going to buy to flip, I would have had it transported straight to Scottsdale, I think, paid some storage, and consigned for next month. (This '46 is a different story, though.)

That car will bring decent coin. They have the original WT engine with it also.
Very desirable color combo , plus 4spd with AC.
Imitation 4x4 stance not adding any value.
