Are they talking about an auto overdrive or manual? Either way neither were available for over a decade and a half anyway.

Oddly, Chrysler did premiere a lot of oddball technologies in the early '70s that didn't really become staples until much later. The two that come to mind is ABS brakes and Air Bags.

Actually, there were a few 5 speed manual O/D trannies used in the late '80s. They were VERY fragile units with a low torque capacity, used mainly in 4 cyl and V6 applications. GM and Ford introduced O/D automatics in '80-'81, once again with LOTS of teething problems and low torque capacity. It wasn't until the early-to-mid '90s thar HD, high-performance O/D transmissions - both manual and auto - became commonplace however.

That does look correct. Basically, even the non-SD one looked and worked the same. It's just the part number as far as I can tell that's stamped on there that's any different.

schneidsd455 do you have the rear window defroster with the 80 AMP alternator. I have one on my 74 455 Ram Air Formula.

80 amp alternator was MANDATORY with A/C & heated back glass (71-76) Or could be spec'd without (optionally),I believe.

Yes, 80 amps alternators were required on cars with A/C AND rear window defrost. They have a different bracket set up, using an idler pulley to adjust tension on the alternator belt. Very susceptible to belt squeal. Recently got my 8-year battle with belt squeal to go away by scarifying the pulleys following the advice in the Tech Q&A in a recently HPP. Ahhhhh.......

Back to the idle stop solenoid. I was thinking that I got mine from a guy who was helping me with my car shortly after I bought it in 99. But now that I think about it, I think I recall telling him that I already had one in a box of parts that came with the car. Looking at pics in the Service Manual of q-jets with solenoids attached to them, I can see a difference. Why would SDs need a different bracket? I can understand a different setting, but not the need of a different bracket. Anyone know?

The one pictured in the service manual is off. That threw me off too and on a wild goose chase for a year or so.

Did anyone see Modern Marvels tonight on the History channel? It was on 70s tech and included a segment on Trans Ams. They even talked about the SDs. I heard the term Super Duty more times in that segment than I think I've heard from any other TV show. Some of their facts were a little iffy (455 big block), but that's to be expected on a show made for the masses. There were some nice shots of a 74 blue 4sp SD kicking a little butt.

Yes, that was very suprizing to see that much air time devoted to the trans am and it's significance on '70's pop culture, not to mention the T/A as the "musclecar of the 70's".

That's the episode my '73 was in! The '74 was really nicely done and a strong runner. That was pre new paint for my '73 so if any of you notice the incorrectly colored decals for my ride they've been rectified.
