I have my 64 because it met my criteria for my next purchase: very clean, fun, not necessarily original so I can play with it without overly worrying about ruining a museum piece. And all for a reasonable price.
Early GTOs were never my favorites as I tend to prefer the late 69/early 70 styles in all muscle cars. However, almost like an arranged marriage I guess, I've grown to live it! Specifically, I love the rarity and significance of the first muscle car for sure. I love being different and you do not see nearly as many 64s around. I like the tail lights better on 64 v. 65. I like the machined dash. The horizontal lights are growing I me. I love the hood. I really love the light weight. Yup, I'm happy with my arranged marriage!

I love'em both. Own a '65. Have never owned a '64, not for lack of trying. '65 gets my vote, with a slightly better platform, more aggressive styling, and diagonal seat upholstery. '64 and '65 are both lean, mean, seminal musclecars, and will always be in style!

As some have said, they're both lean, mean muscle cars. Platforms are identical. Styling is similar except the '64 is cleaner.
The spun aluminum dash and best steering wheel of any Pontiac are pluses for the '64, but the Rally gages and hood scoop that can be made functional are pluses for the '65. How can you not like them both?

The '65 nailed it in the looks department

65 for the hood and scoop, stacked headlights, tail lights, and body lines.

1964
A pure musclecar with no frills. Big engine in a small car, period. Nothing more and nothing less than what was needed to get the job done.
All of the GTOs are great cars, I just like the simpler style and purpose of the original GTO the most.

65, because of the tail lights and tail panel, the hood, and the front end.

Looks like a 3-4 shift technique to avoid 2nd?

Staged so you can see the pattern on the shift ball, same as the food on a menu is much better looking than what comes when it's ordered.
Not necessarily practical, but used for aesthetics. |

I only shift like that when I miss the handle as I grab for it. K

This shift technique was often used in the sixties and early seventies by hormonally driven young men who had sweaty palms from the nervousness of being on a first date with a long legged girl wearing "hot pants" and didn't want to risk having their hand slip off knob during spirited driving.

Not a GTO owner, so was surprised to see 2 to 1 fav on 65 in poll.......... thought 64 was legendary favorite for some reason.... I like the one year deal and the more basic 64 look... and the foresight to put a TA dash in one, wow..........

Looks like the Pontiac rep there for the photo shoot said "Don't care what you do, but don't you dare cover up the shift pattern on the ball." I've never grabbed the shifter that way.
I have to go for the '65 because of the looks. The '64 started my desire, and my test drive I took in '64 had my blood boiling, but it wasn't much more that a warmed over Malibu in styling.

Gotta go with the 64
1. It was THE FIRST muscle car, bar none.
2. My college roommate bought one brand new in 1964 (2dr post sedan, 4-speed) and it was faster than $#!T 3. I cannot afford a 64 GTO now (I do remember when you could have bought a good one for $2K), but I did buy a 1964 Beaumont (yah, not a 389, a Canadian-built with a weeny 283, but it still looooooooooooks nice) so another reason to go with 64. 4. See #1. |

I can't vote I love both the years. I have a 64 I like the look it reminds me a little of the 62 Cat. But I would like to have a 65 also.
