Update......
Up until my Sunday 150+ mile round trip to the dragstrip I have been able to slightly tighten some or all of the header bolts to some extent after nearly every heat/cool cycle of the engine. The need to tighten has gradually diminished as time has gone on. I checked them yesterday afternoon and was only able to tighten 3. I have found that my Craftsman 3/8" "line" wrench reaches most of them and my Craftsman 3/8"-7/16" combo reaches the rest.

hey David,
I remember on the last set of Doug's on my 68 Firebird I had to tighten a few times but after that the header bolt stayed tight. I like them so much I ordered a set for the 68 I am currently restoring they arrived today :-) now all i have to do is wait for my painter to finish.

I had a couple of "Chevy" guys drooling under the hood of the GTO Monday night. One of them pointed out the Doug's label on the headers. They thought they were great looking but neither one had heard of Doug's.

One last update. (Maybe........)
I tried to tighten the header bolts again last night and the all were good and tight. Maybe I've outlasted em'!

I think I tightened mine a few times and after that they were good to go!!... Hows the fuel pump set up coming along David? I remember i had to bend my mounting bracket so i had the straightest shot entering the pump and leaving it..... FWIW

I'm probably order my parts this week Darby. I'm going to go with a lower pressure (6psi) version of the Carter pump you have (p4070?) and I'm going to bite the bullet and get a Carter M6405 mechanical pump to bolt to the engine. I'd use my current Carter mechanical pump up front but I want the return line of the M6405. I'm working on a couple of ideas on how to mount the electric pump to the tank strap bolts. I talked to Cliff for a while this morning and he also gave me a couple of ideas on how to possibly modify the fuel pick-up. I picked up a 455 shortblock a couple of weeks ago and monkeying with it kinda shifted my tinkering in a different direction for a while. But it's piled up in the corner and I'm back on the fuel thing.

You can just plug that return line doesnt hurt anything thats what i did.. I think i run the 6907 one? not sure.. if u dont mind two little holes in your trunk i would try and mount it up there where the line comes out of the tank.. I have never done anything to my tank its all stock!..It all depends what your going to do if your not going to race it all that much i wouldn't worry about the pick up.. My friend Mchell on here used to run a little ole napa electric to help feed his mechanical on his gto.... worked fine for quite awhile if I remember right! Keep us updated!

I thought I'd drag this thread back up to discuss removing my PF30 day before yesterday/last night during the 1st oil change since installation of my headers. My normal sequence during an oil change is to enjoy a 15-20 minute drive and then park the car and let the oil drain for a while. I did that and while the oil was draining I lay down beside the car to remove the oil filter. I usually cover the downpipe with a towel and pull the filter out from under the wheelwell. I could see that the clearance had tightened up with the headers installed and I knew some guys had had some oil filter fitment issues but my filter installed with no problems. So it should come off with no problems. Right? Nope. After loosening the filter I spun it off and tried to slide it between the headers and the frame/suspension. To big by about 1/4 to 3/8". I twisted and angled it to no avail. Luckily the filter would sit on the headers by itself, so I stood up and scratched my head. Now what. I tried pulling it out from the top. Nope. I could pull the trans cooler lines loose? Pain in the butt. Loosen the headers? Pain in the butt. Take the oil filter housing off the block? Pain in the butt. Pull the motor? Drop the trans? Remove the seats? What to do? Time ran out on my day so last night after Church I pulled on some old clothes and put the car on jack stands. After trying various oil filter contortions I tried to pull the PF30 through the cavity created by the headers/oil pan/auto trans inspection cover. Hmmmmm. I could get it started but it wouldn't quite fit. Then I realized that with 4 screws I could REMOVE the inspection cover. Instant easy (if you don't mind jacking up the car and taking off the inspection cover) access to the stock sized filter.
My PF30 actually fits fine when it has been installed. No clearance issues. I must have put the cooler lines on after I installed the filter housing/filter during my header installation so I didn't see what was coming with filter removal. The reason for my concern is that I have a few PF30 filters sitting on the shelf and I hated to have to go with a smaller diameter filter because of the headers. Where do you guys run into oil filter fitment/clearance issues with your Doug's?

I had the same issue on the GP's Doug's and elected to leave the converter dust cover off, providing a little air cooling in the process.

Thought I'd update this, since it's been a year.
A couple of times in the last few months I've tried to tighten the header bolts and the collector bolts. I managed to get a little more on a couple of the header bolts and the collector bolts remain tight. I've noticed no leaks either through sound or through a tail tale sooty mark anywhere. Appearance wise the ceramic coating finish still looks just like it did upon installation. Nice and shiny. No rust. No flakes. No issues. From my experience, Doug's makes a nice product. I haven't found the noise to be an issue. My 50 year old ears can't tell the difference between the RA III manifolds I took off and the headers. It may be a different sound but I don't feel they are louder. And hey, they look cool...........

Nearly 2 years now on my Doug's. I check the bolt tightness from time to time and haven't been able to move any of them since I posted here back in February. I dropped a little transmission fluid on the passenger side header a few months ago and it immediately cooked. I found that a little dab of GoJo on a cooled off header will take such right off. The coated finish still looks like new all around. Well pleased..........

mine are all dulled out and in one area the ceramic is rough and grey. i heard the coating is still there but it burnt off the polishing. anyway to get back the smooth luster on that one part and polish up the rest??

They are the D590, ceramic coated.
1 3/4" primary. Bought them from Performance Years a little over 2 years ago.

Great thread ! here iar a couple pics of a wrench I modified back in 1980 to install a set of Hooker headers on a 389 in a 66 GTO...It was a S-K TOOLS 9/16 combo. I added 2 bends and ground the open end thinner......worked like a charm!! Eric P.S. some times using a stud in certain holes was very helpful to get things started. take your time and dont loose your patience!
