I ran the old M&H DOT 315/45-16s on some extra "front" 16x8 IROC wheels. They are like the GTA fronts and have close to a 0 offset maybe 1/2" bs.

I am surprised that with 6" back spacing you don't have problems with the tires rubbing on the springs. My 295/50x15s rub on the springs on hard turns. There is more sidewall flex in those of course.

I just followed what car craft said in their article on widest meats on your car. It worked out good. I do have a 12 bolt rear rather than a 10 but I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I guess I always wanted to take a Trans Am to the 'Next Stage' and this is my way of doing it. I don't particularly like the term 'Pro Touring', but I suppose this is it!

Trev you will have to let us know how that frame works out. Mounting it and maybe the ride quality after you are done. I have been thinking about that frame for my 71.

Trev,
You still have that 70-73 VFN nose for sale?

I still have the nose. I quit trying to sell it after making 5 or 6 trips to the UPS office getting shipping quotes for people who then didn't want to buy it. I think I will just keep it for a possible future project.

I finally got back to the car this weekend and installed the subframe with the Alston connectors. Here is a picture of the underside from the front.

Looking from the rear you can see how the Alston connectors go to the rear frame rail instead of the traditional front spring mount. The subframe is actually about 4" shorter at the rear than the stock subframe. So I was only just able to get them to connect to each other. I have boxed in the connection for strength.

Right now I have only one bolt in each rear subframe connector. I drilled a tight bolt hole with the connector hard up against the frame. I can now remove the entire assembly for paint and build up. I can then (fingers crossed) reassemble to the car after the body is painted using the 2 bolts for alignment. Then I will weld the rear connectors to the frame rails.

Now with that exotic front end what is the plan for the rear?

I really did want to buy it but you never got back to me with a shipping quote. I figured you were just too busy or didn't want to ship it to Canada and gave up.

I did get a quote for Canada. I think it was about $95. I was sure you were one of the Guys I sent it too. Sorry for that.

Skip, the rear end will stay pretty basic. Out with the 10 bolt and in with my Moser 9" and 3.55 gears. New Global West lowered springs and Del-Al-Um bushings and shackle kit. To redesign the rear suspension on these cars is a huge job. I did spend (waste) a lot of time a few years ago setting up a 73 Formula body with a 'Satchel Link' rear suspension, but I never finished it. It was about when I moved from Michigan, so I ended up giving the body away.

No prob Trev. Your current project is very cool. You've got some awesome work going on there. I've been curious since you changed your avatar. Why the change from the early second gen body? Just variety?

I really wanted to 'Hot Rod' something, and I couldn't bring myself to cut up such a rare car. So I sold the 72 Formula 455HO to the Guy who painted my red 78 (new avatar). The 78 is my current ride, at least until I finish the new car.

Trev,

I don't know you like others here, but I appreciate your info/pics on the subframe connectors.

I am restoring/modifying a '79 10th manual car. I ordered a pair of the Alston weld connectors to help stiffen it up.

Thanks,
Mark
