Gee,fellas, does this crap just go on & on & on? "Not a real GTO" "just a rebadged Monaro" blabbedy blab... Personally I don't give a damn what they call it, how pissed off you purists are, or what someone else's opinion is of the styling (purely subjective guys...really). If you haven't driven this car shut the f*** up. Good gawd folks, Pontiac ripped the GTO moniker off of Ferrari! You can bet the Enzo lovers around the world must have been mighty pissed off about that "rebadging"! Besides, Holden is essentially a division of GM anyway, as is Opel where the platform really originated. I personally don't give a damn where it came from. They could have called this car the Turd From Down Under & it would still have given me a hard-on the first time I drove it! I've had a good time over the years keeping my eyes out for the great car that just doesn't "catch on" so I can steal it at the end of the year at a sizable discount (& enjoy more car than I can usually afford). Remember the Subaru SVX? Yes, the one with the "havsey" side windows that everyone either loved or hated. 230hp DOHC boxer 6, AWD,comfort for 4, etc. Ever drive one...on a bumpy, slick road? Amazing piece of work & it stickered for more than $30k in '92 - I bought one at the end of '92 for over $7k off list, drove it 148k & loved every minute of it - another "sleeper" that slipped in under the radar as a treat to those who don't give a damn about hype & horsesh*t. I've driven the '05 Mustang (had an '87 LX 5.0) & it's a nice car, but it ain't no GT...excuse me, it ain't no Monaro!!

i'm just trying to figure out why everyone is so crybaby about this car. What is so special about the old GTO's? I'm not talking about any kind of historical importance. I'm wondering why people love the 'original' GTO so much. I'm not sure, but i'm pretty sure a stock 'new' 'GTO' would out perform a stock 'real' GTO. I'm positive it would stop in shorter distances, get better gas mileage, handle better, ride better...etc. I don't understand the 'it's not a real GTO' argument. Did GM send out a mailer to all the 'real' GTO owners saying 'here, this is the 'new' GTO, you have to like it, and you have to buy one'? I doubt it.
Just because this isn't the GTO the supercool high school Football superhero that you wanted to be at your highschool drove while he was listening to some badass AM radio while chasing some tail while you were stuck driving mommies Gremlin or Delta station wagon doesn't mean you gotta bash the car because other people like it. What's going to happen when the firebird name is stuck on something new? I'm glad the internet wasn't around when american automakers went to front wheel drive...what a mess that would be

a "real" GTO was just that. a pontiac. the new GTO is a australlian car with a chevy engine and has a pontiac badge on it. yeah they havent made a real pontiac since 78/9 so why put not just any pontiac badge but a GTO. remember the GTO was the first muscle car. if i was worried about gas mileage i would have bought a import and put the big turbo(s) and all that on it to make up for the lack of cubes. why handle when youre going fast in a straight line ? thats the idea behind a drag race smart guy. what are you gonna do when/if they come out with the new chevelle and it looks like a 70ish ( like a chevelle should ) and has better numbers out of the box with the same engine as the "new" gto ? i bet thats what theyre doing now. or what about the 06 charger? why does GM have to cater to chevy? lets put a 350 in it. hows that for origionality? how many years have they done this now ?

Funny, which division is pushing the GTO again? Oh right, PONTIAC.

which American Made Pontiac would you want to wear the GTO badge?

Uh, cars wouldn't sell if they couldn't handle. This is 2004, not 1964. Cars today can do both and if you have never gone carting or road racing, it is 1000% more fun than drag racing.

How does Pontiac cater to Chevy? The LS1/LS2 engines are not Chevy's hate to tell you. But then again, educated people and people not in denial already know this.

LS1/LS2 not Chevys? Who designed the basic architecture? In their current form, who used them 1st? GM has lost its way and is trying to convince the world that it can still engineer with the best automotive mfg's. Corporate engine? Bull. Consumers can see through the smoke screen and have made that clear with their pocketbooks. Sadly Toyota is soon to become the top automaker because of decisions like the one that created the "new" GTO. GM is capable of better.

Well DUUHHH!!!! With 40 years of additional technological developement I would hope the 'new' GTO did things a little better than a 'real' GTO did. At least you understand (and admit) that the 'new' GTO isnt a 'real' GTO. Thats progress.

Everyone wants the new GTO to

1. Look like (pick a year) GTO
2. Have it's own engine
3. Built in the states

1 and 2 ain't gonna happen, ever. Even if GM decided on a Northstar V8 instead of the LS1/LS2 many would still be pissed off. number 1 isn't gonna happen either. The new GTO will never be retro look-a-like similiar to the 05 Mustang. More aggressive in appearance? Sure, I'm all for that. Number 3 is gonna happen in 07, so that will at least be one hurdle for the haters to get over.

And this bickering about what constitutes a "real" GTO is lame. Here are the 2 reasons some 'old school' guys hate or dislike the car.

1. Not made in America
2. Styling

Those are the ONLY two reasons.

Letters on the side of the car just like back in 64. As real as a 64 to 74 ever was.

Thank you for proving my point. I'll challenge you as I do with everyone else, find on GM's website where it states the LS1/LS2/LS6 as a "Chevrolet" engine. PLEASE.

Sorry, but Chevy ALONE took over sales lead from Ford. Toyota is WAY behind GM in sales. Keep dreaming.

That's reason enough for me. Also the generalization that if somebody doesn't fall all over themselves over the GM Monaro then that must mean they are old school, a troll, or they hate / dislike the car. Not true. As an Australian made performance sedan it does the job. There is no one year that GM could have modeled this car after, but Pontiac did have a fairly consistent theme through out the course of the car in the way of grill and tail light treatment.(65-67, 68-69 ) A little effort in this arena would have easily pushed the GM Monaro into GTO territory.

Don't want to rain on your parade Mr GTO. But, Chevrolet will not catch Ford Division in U.S. sales this year.

After nine months, Chevy had drawn to within 8,303 sales of Ford. But Ford dealers applied a full-court press in October and November and pretty well blew Chevrolet out of the game.

Ford beat Chevy by 14,780 sales in October and 12,150 in November to bring its advantage to 35,233. That lead appears to be too big for Chevrolet to erase.

I'm glad you realized how boring and anoying the 'mommie' theme is, because that's just how most people feel about your "Monaro" campaign! I figured if I repeated something often enough, you might realize how aggravating and basically useless it is. I promise to stop taking up space with your momma if you'll stop using the term"rebadged Monaro" in every other sentance!

Shouldn't we be comparing Ford to Chevy, Pontiac and Buick? I mean if you want apples to apples..

why handle when you're going in a straight line?
last time i drove, i seem to remember some curves on the road somewhere...oh, and i think i had to slow down at least once. i've been told about these things called country roads. maybe you've also heard of them. these roads are a lot of fun to drive on. more fun i think than going in a straight line all the time. also i think those roads are where power in a car becomes more fun.
maybe i like a car that handles because i've been around import cars most of my life, around SCCA tracks. I've also been to drag strips and those silly Nascar races.
and when a 'new' chevelle comes out, once again, i won't care. A new Charger? Who cares! These cars aren't going to look like the cars they're named after! Get over that, it's never going to happen. I believe it's called Aerodynamics. That's one reason cars now won't look like cars then, at least cars that are mass produced. Wasn't the public screaming for a v8 powered car, that was fast, stylish, and affordable? And didn't GM deliver? (styling is objective as we all know) But wah-wah, it doesn't have hideaway headlights, a 455, vinyl bucket seats, drum brakes, a 4 speed tranny, rally wheels...on and on...so let's all get uptight because they stuck a GTO emblem on this car.
I have a great idea...take the GTO emblem off! holy crap! Then, you can put a Grand Prix emblem on it...or a Grand Am emblem. Even make some custom Tempest or Le Mans emblems! Maybe, get really wild and make a Bonneville/Grandville emblem. You can make it what ever your little heart desires. It seems the big cry-factor here is the Emblem, so just make it something you want it to be

Isn't that the job for the manufacturer of the product? If not, then why even paint the car? Just sell it in primer so the new owner can "make it something they want it to be."

I really don't care if you want to use references to my mama in your posts..whatever turns you on. Also I never used the term "rebadged Monaro" but rather GM Monaro, which is what it is, plain and simple. GM would probably have done themselves a favor by introducing the GM Monaro for what it is instead of some lame ass attempt to capitalize on the GTO name. (you also made reference to the size of my tallywhacker...not sure what your motivation there was but you probably ought to keep your deviant fnatasies to yourself)
