I used another brand of clear and I am not happy with that at all. All I have to say is, I'm never going to use clear again. It might have been the temp I sprayed it at, I won't know for at least another month and a half when it cools down again. I am going back to a type of paint that can be fixed if something does not go right. Single stage solid color urethane can be fixed easy.

One thing is for sure, the more paint that the paint companies can sell you, the more they make.

I saw a car about a month ago done with Matrix BC/CC in black. That car looked as good as it gets. I asked about the paint, it was also mentioned there was some trouble with the clear. I started to do some research on the web on Matrix. I found the comparison charts. I looked up the clear that I used and found out it was a medium solid clear. When the place sold it to me they did not mention the medium solid part, they only told me it was good stuff. I knew some of the paint companies told the distrubutors not to post prices on the web. http://www.matrixsystem.com/ccomparison.html

Ken..there isn't anything easier to fix that a BC/CC paint job. The technique for fixing cleared panels is much easier and more permanent that SS paint jobs. You need to be more forthcoming here and explain what the problem is...because you are seeing it correctly.

I use to buy this at the swap meet for $50.00 a gallon. The guy that sold it said it would last about 4 years with hardner added. I know 3 cars that were painted with it. The paint lasted about 4 years just like he said.

Here the sun and hard water is what ends up doing the paint in. They were selling black for $30.00 a gallon, I was using it for chassis paint. They might still sell the paint at the swap meet. They use to sell lots of it to Mexico. People from San Diego would go to TJ for cheap paint jobs.

Ken..still why do you think BC/CC is difficult to repair?

I'm not worried so much on the repair. I just want it to look good. So far it has been a lot of work. I don't care for it at all. I have more work to do when it cools down. I know a few people who own some paint shops. Some of them still like to use AE. They complain about the clear coming off. The sun can really damage clear here. Even the newer cars have the clear coming off after a few years. To me it has been more work than it will ever be worth.

I got a kick out of that swap meet paint. I had people say they would never buy it because if there was problems I would not have any recourse. I painted a Nissan with it. The neighbor saw the car after it was painted and wanted to paint his truck with it. After the truck was painted, he would not drive it for 2 weeks because he was afraid of wrecking it. He would go into the garage and stare at it. He said not one single person ever said one bad think about it. Someone who owns a paint shop saw the truck and ended up painting a street rod with the paint.

I use to spray a bunch of that Delstar back in the early 80's. With hardner it was great stuff. I never had a problem with it, or the corresponding clear. You could cut and buff like urethane. You just couldn't blend or color match very well with it. $50/gal is probably a little less than what shop price was back then too

Ken....clear is BETTER in sun..much. You are getting bad advise from shops and not seeing the entire picture yourself. Sure..there are some peeling clear jobs out there. But..how many faded cars do you see now? Ken..do you remember when cars that were 5-7 years old looked like crap if not babied? Cars look great 10 years old now and the average Joe barely washes them. This is because of BC/CC systems. Painting with AE is ok if you are comfortable with it...but it is so old technology. I still use it sometimes on things, but in no way would I paint a newer car with it. People forget how things used to be...I don't. The ratio of peeling clear cars to the amount of faded cars with the older AE paints is heavy in the faded paint jobs. It was so common to see faded paint..very common. You don't see that now. You see an occassional peeling job..no contest. AE will fade when in the sun..even with hardener added. The pigments are different..totally different chemistry.

I like just plain urethane. AZ is not like the east. You can have cars that are only a few years old with the clear coming apart on them. I can drive up and down the street and take pictures of a bunch of them. I used the AE because it was cheap and easy to use. I just sanded down the old paint and sprayed it right over the top. Those exspensive paint jobs don't fly here if the car is outside most of the time. How many of the people who own the newer cars and make payments will ever get the car repainted? They will just trade them in or leave them like they are. I use paint that suits my needs if the car sits outside.

well acylic enamel is not the same as single stage urethane Ken. So what are we talkjing about here? You mention plain urethane this time, but have been saying acylic enamel before.
You are way off on the amount of cars that have BC/CC problems, way off. But that argument isn't going to be settled here. Fact is I am a painter and have been painting at some level for more than 30 years. I have used all kinds of materials and feel that my view on the chemicals today is accurate and has strong credence and experience backing it up.

How many cars do you won't with pictures of with sun damage to the clear. it's not an isolated incedent. How many times have you been to AZ? I'm not trying to get in a pissing match about paint. It's not bad advice I'm getting from the painters I know. The guy who sells paint even says he has seen many cases of BC/CC going to hell in 3 years.

It's not rocket science. If you use a paint without clear, you won't have a problem with sun damage to the clear.

I don't even know why I am going to waste my time on cars that don't belong to me. I am going to post pictures of cars with clear that is going to hell. I see them every day. Doesent matter the make, they all get it. I saw a Jag yesterday, I know where it is parked. Cadilacs, Hondas, you name it. Even white cars are not imune, white reflects the heat.

I have a 1997 Dodge truck. Factory emerald green metalic. The paint job looked great up until the spring of 2005. For some reason that winter took it's toll. The roof started to fade. Then the hood. Now the paint is nearly gone from the hood and roof. The rest of the paint still looks good. Is it because the factory paint jobs suck? I live in Colorado and the truck sits out 100% of the time (too long for the garage).
