Many examples in the 70-73 Bird series.... People fall into the 70-73's are the same trap. It is a minefield, as we all know.......... Stuff changed for no obvious reason. One would think retooling for ridiculous minor changes would cut into profit..... They knew 30 plus years later it would drive people berserk.... Put a 70 dash panel on a 73? You flippin' idiot!!!!!!!! on and on...... How many of us have bought wrong year parts thinking we were hot stuff experts? Add in that repro catalog places half the time don't really know what fits what and misrepresent stuff, let alone talk to someone on the phone like they really know...... and that repro stuff is garbage and incorrect mostly anyway..... will all just drive you to drink......

I have been examining the front parking lights on my 72 Firebird, and a great many problems appear to involve either corroded sockets or loose contacts. One symptom can be flickering or dimming lights. Sometimes, cleaning the contacts or adjusting metal tabs brings good results. Another thing I found that made a big difference in visibility is using the right type of bulbs and making sure they're facing correctly. As a point of curiosity, have you investigated the wiring harness near the bumper for wear? On one similar project, this made a big difference. While reading through various setups of different vehicle lighting, I came across Bnlboston Limo and took notice of how professional cars deal with visibility and placement of lights, which did give me some ideas on improving my setup.

Last post here was 18 years ago, but your insights seem very plausible.
Of Note; The later 2 versions of the '72 lights are a capsule ( clear and Amber)
and the symptoms on those are usually in the harness socket which has its own ground. Early models seem to have what you describe.
