I'll be measuring the 17's, ASAP, it'll be a while, my burrette, and stand are at my dad's shop, an hour away.

LOL, I just read on Wallace Racing, they list the 68, as 8.6:1. 265 HP, maybe low comp 2Bbl to run on low octane (regular) gas???
I wouldn't think a 67 350 would be lower comp and a 70 350. My motor book lists the 68 350 as 9.2:1...Time will tell...

I know a lot of the guys on here build their cars for track time too. My car will never see a drag strip. I'm not worried about making my car hook, launch, or ever run low 11's. I have a buyer for the 305 and he's giving me more than what I'll pay for the 350! Otherwise I'd be finding a boat owner to give it to.

g-bod,
I was wondering if you know what year 350 you are buying??? I am assuming that 68-69 350's only have the 2 motor mount bolt holes in the block (Assuming, because I don't know for sure). Your motor mount set up would need the 70 and up 5 bolt block...Jujst a thought....

No luck on finding that intake. I'll just use the one from my 455 since I'm going to run it as is.

I hate to disillusion some of you guys, but I owned a '76 Grand Prix with a 350 Pontiac/TH400/2.92:1. It was a 2-barrel motor that consistantly delivered 19-21mpg.
I was in my early 20's back then(1985),so that engine was flogged regularly. It NEVER let me down. It was sold to a neighbor when I bought my '72GP. He was still driving it 10yrs later!

No knocks on 350's from me. I just want to wake mine up a little, on a budget. I've heard of many Pontiac 350's that ran great.
g-body, Don't be afraid of an EGR intake on the 350, especially a 77 or 78.

I talked to the guy today and the '71 350 had water in one of the cylinders
At least he had the decency to call before I made the trip on Thurs. He has a few others that he's going check for me. No big deal. If worst comes to worst I'll just go full speed ahead on the 455 like I had planned anyway.

He doesn't want to let any of the 400's go very cheap. Yeah I could probably find one if I looked, but I have a good rapport going with this guy and he's willing to take partial trades for scrap metal on a 350. He's into demo derby stuff and yanks all the BOP engines when they build a car....which equates to a trailer full of engines. I'm dropping my block off at his buddy's machine shop tomorrow and hopefully I'll get a chance to see exactly what he has up there.

![]() The most original 17 head of the two (one had been worked on w/ a 45 degree intake seat...) I searchd out the best valve w/ the most margin, and the best seat (all looked VERY good) 83.5 cc's for the 17 head. That puts the comp ratio @ about 8.25:1...yee ha. I have a feeling this 17 head is the same as the 11 heads on my 350 now...

Another note...
One of my Pontiac fellow enthusiast's told me, and I read the same in Jim Hand's book, that essentially ALL 67 and up "D" port heads have the same port shape/volume. Jim Hand says they are all around 153 cc's. Just for curiosity I measured the same port that I cc'd the chamber on. it was 150.5 cc's. The difference in most of those heads is the chambers and valve size. The deeper chambers changes the port alignment. I have a 77 (from my car) and a 78 400. I might re-work the 17's, install 2.11 and 1.77 valves in them, give them a Jim Hand port job, and use them on a 400 (maybe) I'll have to evaluate the 400's first. I think that the small valve (my opinion) 350's from 68-70 and all about the same chamber size as I measured, then in 71 the chambers got way bigger to knock the comp ratio down to 7.6:1 My motor book lists the 68 and 69 small valve 350's as 9.2:1. Not knowing the deck height of a stock 350, it could even be less. I'm guessing at 8.25:1 w/ the 8.35 cc chambers using Jim Hand's compression ratio guide for the popular Pontiac engines on page 74 of his book. I found a head/compression ratio chart @ Wallace Racing, they list the 68 350's as 8.6:1, crap at least they are closer that my Motor Book. One thing that Jim Hands tells you in his book, is to check every head for it's chamber volume, never to take it for granted...Thanks again Jim Hand!!! One good thing I did uncover, I cc'd a chamber on a 6X-4 head, it came in @ 93 cc's. I was glad about that one, I've heard that some -4's can be quite a bit more...
