My absolute biggest pet peeve is people who do not know what to do at an out-of-order intersection with flashing traffic lights.
It drives me crazy when people have a flashing yellow one way and a flashing red the other and they treat it like a 4 way stop. Then when someone comes up to the yellow and does what he is supposed to do, he gets cursed out for 'running' the light.

Second place peeve is people's ignorance of the 'slower traffic keep right' rule. They ride right next to each other on a two lane highway for miles and miles at 49mph in a 55 zone, totally oblivious to all other traffic building behind them. I call that 'driving in formation'.


So many people that have licenses have no idea what the rules of the road are.

A construction worker who was in charge of installing traffic lighting on a local job here tells me that it's a state law that all parties have to stop at traffic lights even if the one side is flashing yellow. I don't want to know if that's true, so I just go through on the yellow if it looks safe. Otherwise you'd think the light would be flashing red on all sides.

I never brake light people unless they've decided that they want to rage on me without promise of letting up. If they're flipping me off and pretending they're going to hit my car, I'm very skilled at making them bite their tongue when they're in mid sentence of screaming profanities. You can blow them a kiss and watch their heads explode.

I remember one kid deciding he didn't like my abrupt departure from a line of traffic on I-40 when I decided to go down a exit ramp to another interstate to avoid the jam. He decided he wanted to chase me down (while I was only doing the speed limit). He flipped me off and floored his Ford Probe to run away. I pedaled my turbo ZX up beside him and started doing circles around his car on the interstate at about 100+ speeds. He had done his best to get away and I just went right by, crossed in front of him and slowed down in the 3rd lane as he passed. And then I went back around him on the right. Did this about 3 times until he grabbed an exit to get away with his tail tucked. Still funny to me today. I stopped and waved at him considering whether I wanted to cut through the grass to show he couldn't get away if I didn't want him to, but decided he was humiliated enough.

Well Doug, you got me doubting myself so I looked it up...at least in Georgia-

“A red flashing light means you must stop completely (treat as you would a stop sign). Proceed with caution only after yielding the right of way to pedestrians and to other vehicles at the intersection.”
"A yellow flashing light means you must slow down and exercise caution before proceeding through the intersection.”

I'd be very surprised if it was any different in TN or any other state.


Curiosity got the best of me so I looked for TN. guidelines on traffic signals...I think I see what his confusion was-
It's to be treated as a 4 way stop if the signals are inoperative. They are not considered inoperative if they are flashing.
This is really the rule of thumb for any place I know of. A dark light is a stop light.

c) The driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection that is controlled by a traffic-control signal that is inoperative because of mechanical failure or accident shall come to a full and complete stop at the intersection.....
A traffic-control signal shall not be considered inoperative if the signal is operating in flashing mode. If a signal is operating in flashing mode, it shall require obedience by vehicular traffic pursuant to § 55-8-112.

To get someone to stop tailgating you just turn your driving lights on momentairily. They don't know that the lights that come on aren't brake lights and will light up their brakes. Jon

Blue lights lighting up. I love it when someone gets a correction like that.
I used to see an ambulance driver in an area I worked on do that to people. When someone would get confused and not get out of the left lane he would just pile up behind them with his lights and siren going until they finally got over. It didn't matter if the right lane was clear and the car in front stopped. He would just sit behind them until they got over. I hope nobody was really waiting on medical aid while he was playing traffic cop.

More and more don't even care what the rules are. They make up their own on a day to day basis.

If in the Provence of Quebec, do not go thru a yellow caution light. Even if you have to slam on the brakes and jackknife the tractor trailer you're driving. You will get a ticket.... $125.00. I found that out the hard way. Yellow means the same as a redlight up there.

If a slow driver is driving less than the posted speed limit(which is moreless a guide on how fast to drive I generally drive 7-10 over).... and a driver comes up behind this person and rides their ass a little to let them know that they feel comfortable driving a little faster.... then.. as a slow driver driving under the posted limit should be considerate enough to pull to the side and let the other person go by.... anything less would be rude and inconsiderate. What gives a person the right to hold up someone that is comfortable driving the posted speed limit???....

BTW - yes... I understand towing... weather conditions etc..... I also understand oblivious inconsideration.... my basis is a clear dry sunny day...... people driving too slow in the fast lane... busy 2 lane roads that aren't really safe to pass on etc.... If someone wants to drive in the SLOW lane on a multi lane highway 5-10 mph under the posted speed limit... that is your business.... but please don't inconvience others....... its just plain rude.

Diego...driving WAS better 20-25 years ago. The worst distraction you had was the occasional woman doing her makeup in the car while driving...these days you have self-absorbed entitlement mentality a$$holes who are so lost when even doing the most menial task that they have to have their GPS turned on all the time, and they mount it right in their field of vision so everyone driving behind them can see it...AND...cell phones, bad enough people talk on them, they also text on them. Also, when I began driving in the mid-80's, cars didn't have cup holders...now they do...European cars don't, they still know that when you behind the wheel, driving is the most important thing, not your coffee, or your phone.

But, Brian, 20-25 years ago, you just didn't have the sensibility to know what driving was like. I got my license in '88 but I don't remember how things were vs. now because I didn't have enough experience to know how things were at the time. had a guy who claimed i crowded him on a turn. after we made the left turn he sped up and swerved and cut me off. well, the road was wet and he wasn't as good a driver as he thought. spun off the road went into the median then back across the road and crashed into the guard rail which spun him back into me. hit me so hard it knocked me over a 8 inch curb and into oncoming traffic. i got stopped without hitting anyone and before i could get out 3 cops were there. i'm sitting facing the wrong way on a 6 lane highway with a wrecked car. luckily the guy behind me stopped and told the statetrooper what had really happened. a dumb drunk had just taken out the 71 Trans Am that had just came out of the paint shop earlier that week.
4 tours in Iraq and now one in A***hanistan running convoy escort, i get roadrage all the time and have to be really carefull i don't just give someone a bump and spin them into a ditch if they tick me off. i think they call it PTSD.

...sounds like a few of the posters here are the very ones I try to avoid when driving, LMAO

...after driving for 45 years ( and driving was a big part of my job for many of those years), and going to racing schools and high performance driving schools, I feel I can handle my cars (most of which have way more than 400HP) way better than most of the other people on the highway. That said, you still have to account for stupidity, and a driver attempting to teach me, or another driver, a LESSON is stupid...rage/lessons etc, it only causes a distraction for both drivers and also endangers many other innocent drivers and passengers in your crash field that don't even know what is going on between you and the "stupid driver"

...serious drivers don't do brake checks, tailgate, clog lanes etc... they eliminate the possible hazzards as quickly as possible to allow safe and smooth passage for all involved...getting there safe and sound is WINNING, attempting to teach lessons on the road is a fools game

...never tailgate regardless how slow the traffic is, other driver/car may be impaired
...never "brake check", could cause a chain reaction killing someone 3 cars back or 2 lanes over
...drive smooth and steady, you'll get there just as quickly with a far slower heart rate

...personally, I've learned patience...I always stay in the right lane unless passing...I NEVER tailgate or brake check, is it worth the drama to save a minute of drive time or kill someone...I usually run the speed limit, sometimes a few miles over or under to stay with traffic flow....driving smooth is the key, plan ahead, look ahead and be safe

...the safety of my family or yours is way more important than any pissing match on the streets or highways...nothing is so important as to jeapordize their lives

...friend of mine had eye surgery recently, lenses replaced and perfect vision, BUT, a side effect is "halo vision" while driving at night with city lights...so, he drives cautious and drives the speed limit, but sometimes a "teacher" comes up behind him and flashes the brights before he can complete a pass on the highway and blinds him to the point he can't do anything but slow down and hold on, which only irritates the "teacher" more and both drivers become distracted by the circumstance

...I drive many cars that are low to the ground and any car tailgating me, especially pick up trucks/Jeeps etc, blinds me to the point I can't see whats ahead of me without adjusting the mirrors to eliminate their lights...stay back and be courteous and thoughtful, the driver ahead of you not be holding you up on purpose, the "teacher" may be the biggest part of the problem
