With the sound of choppers & sirens in the background and incomplete news coming over the radio & phones we got quite a bit done on Friday.

Inspector showed up right before lunch and approved the post holes, concrete was there a 1:00.

Thanks for the compliments. We should have put the fireplace in when we finished the lower level originally, but...

We're really happy with the results. I'll post some more pics later showing the rest of the "car/race" themed basement.

That is really awesome. All I have is posters and shelves in the garage, and some bookshelves filled with model cars and planes/spaceships in my office

My latest project was to install double pocket doors in the office to open things up a little bit. That spread into the hall with crown moulding. I haven't down loaded the pictures yet but I will shortly and will post them.

were the pocket doors hard to install?

I have been contemplating this, the builder made the walk in closet door swing inward, but you cant open it all the way because the shelves go all the way up to the hinge and when the rack is filled with clothes on hangers it limits the door opening by a good 30-45 degrees

Installing a pocket door in an existing wall can be pretty involved. Is the wall bearing? Is there plumbing electrical or heat ducting in the area where the door will slide into?
I knew the wall wasn't bearing but there was wiring that I had to deal with.
First step is to open up the wall, since mine was to be a double door where a single was before, I had to take quite a bit of old wall board off.

Once the wall is opened you can replace the header and install the new pocket door hardware making sure it is level and straight. Then either install the split studs provided with the kit or use solid 3/4" osb as a backer for new wallboard.
Here you can see the shallow electrical box I used to allow the switch to remain near the opening.

Then the new wallboard can be installed and plastered or drywalled.
After plastering and painting the door(s) can be installed and adjusted.
Next the new split jambs (use solid lumber for ease of finishing) can be installed.
Apply casing and that is it. Since I made the opening larger, I had the flooring to patch in.
here is the finished project.

I probably made it sound easier than it really is. There are a few critical steps that can screw up the finished product if done wrong.
I also didn't mention that I'm a remodeling contractor and have done this before.

The next project will be to remove the closet across the hall from the new door-way.
That will open up the stairs to the lower level which is now finished. Then instead of seeing the closet and wall you will see a finished handrail with spindles.
I built this home 33 years ago and it isn't finished yet!

Nice job on the pocket doors Hank.

You're a better carpenter than I am. I have 5 pocket doors (2 in our home office, 2 in our master bath and 1 in our master closet) in our home, and I am very happy to report that my contractor installed all 5 of them...

This is the second home we've built that we've had pocket doors put in to eliminate the problem with normal door swings.

That looks great.

I dont think there is anything in that wall except the light switch for the closet

My good friend is a contractor, I might let him handle it, haha

he actually helped me install my wood floor

OK, so things are pretty slow, it seems nobody wants any home improvement done between the holidays, so it is a good time to take things off of "the list".
I've been ignoring the spice rack note on "the list"' for probably 3 years so I figured now is a good time.
I'm glad I didn't have to charge this out by the hour, nobody would have paid me for the time I have in.

Then when I was done and cleaning up I thought since I have a scrolling blade in the band saw what kind of garage wall art can I do.
Here is what I came up with.

Bought this tonite: about 2200 pounds of Turkish marble tile. The van suspension was down on the jounce bumpers. I guess this marks the start my post-Xmas weight-loss program. But first, a couple of Shipyard XXXX IPA's

My next project is my wife has always wanted a stacked stone facade/veneer on the fireplace.

I found exactly the look she wants and the price that I think is reasonable.

I will post pictures as it goes up.

This is the opposite end where the shower used to be. All of the tile-work has been removed. The plumbing has been cut and capped under the house in the crawl space, and I attached some plywood doublers underneath to patch the two holes where the drain pipes went through. Today I get to start installing new drywall.
