I've been in cases where I'm talking to somebody about my 71 and how it went from an empty shell to being on the road in less than a year, and they'll say something like "You need to fix that door gap", or "why didnt you paint it yet".

Who does that?

I'm with you on that also. I go to the Cruise-in every Wed night . No judging, it's just display what you drove. A little bit of everything. My car could get picked quite easily by any knowledgeable Pontiac enthusiast but the other 99+% of the people enjoy it. Again I say no judging and no awards. That's where the fun is for me.

My take:

I have a 69 ragtop with a 10 foot paintjob. It is garaged. It rarely gets wet. I use dry wash and wax on her so I needn't hose her down. I do this about once a year. Currently all the lil' chips in the paint and dust is visible. Occasionally a bird poops on her decklid. She is mechanically very good to excellent and I maintain her.

My POCI friend asked if I was going to do a frame off. I let him drive her that day, and he said "This drives so nice that I would not want to mess with it until I had to." My "frame-off" is at least 10 years away based on how well she runs and how easy it is to have a car that I can drive on sunny days and enjoy. My German Shepard sits in the front seat and "hairifyes" the car too. People yell out "NICE DOG! NICE CAR!" as I cruise around. Life is good, pressure is low. My friends have multi million $$ car collections and you can eat off any parts of the car. That is what THEY like, I am not knocking it. I think I can park at the market up in the back of the lot and not worry too much. I do. I spin the wheels once in a while, I vacuume her out every few months and I drink my coffee using the console as a cup holder.

Life is good and I am not selling THAT car- ever.

Now, if my NYS Registration (which is effectively my TITLE) for the car does not match my VIN, then I would be concerned. However that can be remedied as well upon a sale to someone who is going to register it in NY State. One can do an actual VIN tracing with paper and crayon to prove ownership of an older vehicle and off to the title bureau she goes to make sure she is not stolen or liened. However, I bet that when that car goes for sale there will be an issue if it is not remedied beforehand. The gent sounds like someone who doesn't want any advice, so leave it at that. If it cost him 200K then so be it. I would not be surprised that he doesn't fix that issue, until it is in the estate and then there will be a whole bunch of problems with the unmatched title and vehicle.

I saw a cool red on red 64 Vette ragtop with what looked like all original paint and interior at the ice cream shop where they have a cruise in. The guys parked away from the cruise in and went in for a sundae with his wife. I looked at the car very closely. He came out and I smiled at him and said "That is a great car! I hope you aren't going to be stripping her down and "restoring" her!" and he laughed and said "No way, what fun would I have with her then?" He went on to tell me that his dad bought the car new, and he got in in 71. He was kind of like a Peter Fonda type of dude from the 60s. He was very laid back and he just enjoyed the car entirely in its original condition! I was on the same page with him. When I first saw it and didnt know who owned it- I really figured this was gonna be some surgeon or dentist who bought the car and was sending her out this fall for a rotisserie job! Thank GOD it wasn't!

He even had the college parking lot permits on the windshield from 1971. Loved it!

For once and for all lets get one thing straight I Didn't CRITICIZE the car or point out anything other than the incorrect vin that is easily seen if looking at windshield. I more than once told the man what a great car and he was in no way upset with me. I asked very few questions and they were only on any know history. I try not to get personal but there seems to be a bunch of morons on this thread that are writing their own story as to what happened. None of you guys know me and your assumptions are so far out in left field it is ridiculous . I go to very few shows or cruisins and when I see a car of interest the questions pertain to know history of vehicle. I consider my knowledge of cars below average so I don't get into it. I hope I kept it simple so you guys can comprehend what I wrote. That being said this will be my last post on this topic.

tigergto, am with you 100%. I see nothing wrong with what you did or said. If someone takes offense to it, or is indifferent, so what? When you take a car to a show, you are open game to all the opinions from everyone. I deal with it all the time too, some are positive, some are not. As car guys, that is what we do.
