good reading on the special 301 for the 78 GA CA , different camshaft used (W72 ?), modified TA exhasut W72 I presume and 1.65 rockers ! big jump from 150 hp to 190 hp

Geez, I asked a question about the 79-80 Hurst W30 and this thread gets sidetracked from 78-80 G-bodies to mid seventies A-bodies and Grand Am prototypes (another A body).

There was a long discussion about that Grand Am CA in another thread here about two years ago. Hows about resurrecting that if you want to mention it's back on craigslist.

yeah and all the other G bodies mention are more attractive cars than the OP..sorry cant make a 79 GP look good just cant.. 301 4 speed is cool, i would have one for a daily mpg cruiser work car but i would still want to upgrade to a GA like a GA CA on looks alone!

how come all the Grand prix's 4 speeds need to be restored. Some body must have a picture of one done. All of these raged out GP's are making my Pacer look like a Pebble Beach show winner

red75pacer, keep trying, there's bound to be a nice one out there.
That black T-top GP in NC was in fairly good shape. I seem to recall it needed a clutch, but was otherwise in dependable condition. Plastic bumper fillers were decayed or missing, but that was one of the few cosmetic issues. That's a southern car nuance, so I would expect it to be solid.

It started out listed at $12,000 IIRC. I don't think it sold even after he dropped the Buy-It-Now to $7500.

I like some of the 78-88 A/G bodies and when I seen the ad back in 2002 for my 78 Grand Am, I just had to have it. And I got it for a good price. And here's the kicker....I did a body-off! And it didn't cost me much. Sandblasted the chassis, replaced brake lines, fuel lines, bushings, ball joints, etc. Along with my brothers we did the bodywork and paint, and I picked up a good running 400/TH350 from a 76 Trans Am. The car sits on 14x7 Rally-II and has the factory Trans Am steering box with 1.25 inch front sway bar and rear sway bar and discs/drums. I changed the rear gears from 2:29 to 3:08 and with the 245-60 out back it runs nice. It has stock manifolds with 2.25 inch duals and Dynomax Super Turbos. It's lighter than the Trans Am. It is certainly rare around these parts. It spends most days and nights in my garage, and every once in awhile I fire it up and take it for a spin. It is not a daily driver. Now some people might think I'm crazy to restore a car like this.........but every year these cars get older and harder to find..............and I like it! I have another 400 block and a set of #64 heads that will someday replace the 185 horse...........or locate a factory W72 engine.

IMO, I like the front of the 78 Olds 442...........but I wished they had went with the roofline same as the Malibu/Lemans. Still it's a great looking car!

i believe that these latest posts have gone far to open up peoples eyes about how rare some of these cars really were. Hats off to everybody who got in the game.

its near impossible to find a good A/G body car. The value is in the eye of the beholder, I looked for about five years, so good cars are not on the market.
Owners of good cars will not sell as the market is not paying.

im computer illeterate, so i have trouble posting pics, but in my stable, i have a 73 lemans with 74000 orig miles that came out of long island--repainted a diff color---but on a no rust all original car. the painter did a few mods, like HEI and gauges/radio/rims, but the rest of the car is stock, still smells like new inside. also, wayyyy back in the day (1991) my dad bought an 85 gp LE 305 4bbl buckets console car from florida with 55000 miles on it. it sat in a heated garage until last year, and now mom takes it to car shows...super nice all original car, and it does get some compliments. i have my original car from when i was 16 (82 olds cutlass) and i think that the 81 to 87 olds cutlasses are the best looking of all the 78 to 88 g bodies--tho there are others i like too--i think the 78 to 80 malibus look super sharp when done correctly---tho i have never been a fan of the seville-back g bodies. it is getting harder to find clean g bodies, thats for sure--i never see any of the 80s cars on the road, and my 70s cars even less.
