I bought a 1974 slant six Plymouth scamp that I was going to drive to save money on fuel. it was so gutless and slow, 2 weeks later I put a 400 4 bbl out of a Newport into it.it was a much better daily driver after that...

My '94 Bonneville SSEI could routinely get 33 MPG making the trip from Menomonie, WI to Madison, WI where my daughter lives. Of course that was with a gentle foot on the gas pedal and keeping the speed below 75 MPH.

Thinking back, my '76 Grand Prix (Pontiac 350/2 bbl/Turbo 400) got 20-21 mpg when I owned it (1984-1988). My '72 S model NEVER saw the high side of 15 mpg.

I guess us hillbilly's are mathematically challenged,lol...Forget I mentioned it... Sure think the Bonny's were great cars.Was ticked when Pontiac dropped them in 05'.Little did I know a few years later all Pontiac's would be gone,& that our 09' G8 would be last new one.

Before you go that route, take a look at the 4.2 liter Vortec. Great I6. Mate it to a 4 speed OD transmission and you could get some decent mileage.

I'd be real happy to have my 75 Vega GT back, and swap one of my VW TboDzl engines into it. damn dream machine

My 84 Fiero 4cyl 4spd averaged a bit over 30mpg highway at 57-62mph
- another gear might would make it better. ... or maybe a VW Dzl conversion on that one whoa - that might be do-able

A co-worker used to have a 92 or 93 Geo Metro 3-cyl that would get +50 mpg.

But then again, who wants to be seen in a Geo Metro?

I owned a '96 Bonny SE that I only drove for about a year. It was good for 29-31 on long trips, that's max.
My LeSabres have all been 1988-1990 models. They all routenely got 30 mpg over the road. The best reading of 32.* was achieved on I-80 from Youngstown OH to Matamoras PA in my '88 T type. That's not bad for hilly terrain most of the way.
I suspect the gasoline quality could have helped some.

If someone were to run 106 octane in a mid-90s Bonneville, it might get close to 40 mpg, but I would have to see it to believe it.

My '75 Ventura custom hatchback got 25 mpg all day long @ 55-60.
That was with the Olds 260 and 3-speed stick; 2.73 gears.

I suppose a 250 I-6 (or 231 V-6 after 1976) with manual trans would do a slight bit better with the same gears, but factory ordered might require a shorter rear gear ratio.
