I have a few "match car" cars from when my kids were young on display in their bedroom when they come to visit...They are sure a pain to dust on that open cabinet!

All my Firebird and TA models were destroyed when I let my 1st born play with them...little turd!

I still have this only one left for me.

I was going to buy the Vega until I saw that the Pinto was a Pearlescent white so, as a kid, I had to have it over the yellow. The bad part is that because the Pinto was so cool looking I never fired it up. Had I had bought the Vega I probably would have wore the tires out on it.

Here's a few pics of my old toy room. 99.5% all Pontiac. Most of the stuff is now sold off or stashed in tubs. I turned this room into a home theater. Approx. 2000 pieces at that time.

Mine was a hand me down from a cousin. But, it seemed by the early 80s hobby stores didn’t have parts for them and I put it back in the box.
Seems there’s plenty of parts on e-bay.

Some of the those Hot Wheels and Matchbook cars in the photo are actually mine from when I was a little kid - including the Hot Wheels case. For some reason, my mom saved them for me....

Obviously the Camaros/Firebirds aren't as I was born in '54.

I've got way to many toy cars. The ones hanging in the garage are probably 95% all Pontiac, plus another couple hundred sitting in the Firebird. I have all the Pontiacs that Danbury Mint made in the house, along with more small and large diecast in the two bedroom closets. It's definitely an addiction.

Thought I would revive an old thread since most people like diecast cars. I just bought these 2nd gen and 3rd gen Firebird Trans Ams off of craigslist from a guy who said he owned all these since he was a kid. I think he was about the same age as I am lol. I really just wanted the Hotwheels Captain America and Black Trans Ams to resell but they are in such nice condition they might have to stay with me a while. I paid 130 for all 42 cars which might be to much but oh well, I like them.

That's quite a collection. Are they Matchbox, Hot Wheels, or? $130 works out to about $3 per car which is probably about the going rate, so I think you did okay.

The condition they are in does justify 3 a car you are right. They are a mix of hot wheels, matchbox, yatming and even a few from France.

While I read it several times when current, I really enjoyed going back this morning and reading the entire thread.

Today's children will probably not believe my next comment; but as a child, Christmas morning normally resulted in one, maybe two models of ships or airplanes, 1 book, and from the grandparents the normal stuff you needed (socks, gloves, and sometimes a $1 bill).

The models were good for about 40 hours of enjoyment (trimming, fitting, and painting) each.

The book would be read and re-read.

My cousin taught me to have patience when assembling models; he used to come to visit when I was 6 or 7 (he would have been 18 or 19), and we would assemble models (he liked the "Models of Yesteryear Series of antique cars), and eat chocolate chip cookies.

After college, I started collecting plastic models of GTO's (I still have the 1966 GTO slot car I purchased from the local Pontiac dealer in 1966) and occasionally, a model of a vehicle that I or my Dad had owned.

Like all of my friends at the time that collected models, I used to laugh at the die-cast, as being only sold to those to lazy to build model kits. Didn't really start collecting die-cast until die-cast of NASCAR became huge, and I collected those of drivers reared in Missouri (the Wallaces, Schroeder, Schrader, etc.). Then when PYE started selling the 1:18 GTO die-cast, I just couldn't resist. I think I have all of the PYE GTO's including many documented "1 of 6", several "1 of 3", and a single "1 of 2". Would like to do an article on these someday, but it seems I always have more to do "someday".

Anyway, thanks again for reviving the thread; hope it takes off again like it did in 2018.

Christmas was always models, books, and some kind of project kit like Erector set. My grandparents always brought me promo models from '55 through the early '60s.

I always rode my bike into town when I was just a kid to go to the hobby shop. Every year they had a car contest and it was displayed in the front window. I wanted to do it one year. Dad was an engineer at GM and said that there will be a Corvair convertible coming out soon, let's build one. We cut the roof off and painted it candy red. It won 2nd or 3rd place and I did the contest for a couple years after with customs.

I'm instilling this routine or process with my 3 year old grandson.

I'll repost my diecasts if not everyone saw before and i'll post some shots of other cars I haven't posted before. I'll buy any 1:18 GTO that comes out. I really want a 62' Catalina 421 SD, but they all appear to be the exact same car, just under a different name, different box. I can't find an original one that isn't just a paint job. I've bought like 3-4 of them and I can confirm they are all the same mold, but just under the Auto World name, Ertl, Special Edition Ertl. In reality it is all Ertl, since they own most of the subsidiaries, but at least their Supercar Collectibles are extremely detailed, same with Highway 61. I wish Acme/GMP would take a stab at making a 61/62' Catalina 421 SD.


I have both their (Acme) 63' Tempest 421 SD and the rare all blacked out version which is 1 or 96. I'm not a big Firebird/Trans Am collector, but Ertl makes an Arnie Beswick version, called the "Boss Bird" which is almost like the "Super Judge" model they make with the plastic body and is pretty much a funny car. I only found the "Boss Bird" once for $200 and hesitated since the price was so high and then decided a few days later I wanted it since I like to have as many Beswick cars as I can and someone ended up buying it. Now I can't find it anywhere.
