Spent the better part of the morning trying to align my hood. Discovered my hinges are long in the tooth, especially the passenger side - one of the rivets almost looks like it's about to fall out and so that specific arm of the hinge causes the hood to bias toward the driver side with a smaller gap between the hood and fender when closed, while being far too high up toward the back on the passenger side with the hood sticking up toward the cowl. I couldn't adjust it so that I could eliminate both issues. If I adjusted out one of those flaws, I had to deal with the other being worse. When it's closed, I'm able to push the down the hood toward the back and it lowers it just a bit, which is another sign the hinges are worn.
After much research, I've decided to have my factory hinges rebuilt than roll the dice on repro hinges. I'm debating between Willie at HoodHingeRepair and Rowland Hall out in California. Rowland Hall appears to be more expensive since his process is more refined, but I haven't gotten a quote from him. I've heard nothing but good things from both vendors, so it's mostly going to come down to price. Rowland Hall seems to be more geared toward concourse resto and I'm fully expecting his price to be higher, but I'm sure my hinges would come back as though I just took them from the parts counter in 1979. Meanwhile, Willie has his prices pretty well publicized.

I picked this up today. It was built in the 90s for the brother of an old customer, and never installed. The brother was killed on his motorcycle soon after, and this has sat in his shop on wooden blocks ever since.

So I've been messing around with fuel mileage measurements. The numbers I've gotten so far have been all over the place due to several factors,. One of the main problems was that I was not driving far enough so that any minor difference in filling up would have a significant effect on the outcome. Anyway, I think I have a fairly accurate measurement now that is 14.5 mpg @ 65 mph average speed. That's over a 156 mile distance. That's not as great as I hoped for, but not too bad. After talking with Cliff, this carb may be a little rich on the primaries. I should have the other carb back together soon to Cliff specs with the kit he sent me and we'll see how that does.

Hey Bill, What year Catalina? (what is the distance of the bar from eye to eye?)
I am wondering if that universal bar will fit a 58 X frame? |

That's why mileage testing is such hard work. It takes a lot of discipline to not let 'er rip. LOL.

No doubt at all...are you just concerned about efficiency or just that she's tuned properly?
I get way better mileage now that I'm driving my age...lol

I'm not concerned at about my fuel cost. I drive this thing for fun. Just looking for signs of any overt tuning problems. And also. I've just been curious as to what it is.

IMO it's a fun challenge to try a squeeze additional MPG out of my cars. For some reason 500 horsepower and 14 mpg is just cooler than 500 horsepower and 12 mpg. |

Put a '65 Caddy MC on my '64 and bent new lines from the frame up to it (ports are on the engine side).
